    Eilidh,

I think that what MikeLB was referring to was that if Somerfield hadn't sold their stores in Stornoway, Kirkwall, Lerwick etc to Tesco, there would have been another Co-op in Stornoway - as the Somerfield would have also have become a Co-op, making another one to go with the two Co-op stores that are already in Stornoway. I think?

Thankfully, that didn't happen, so it's all hypothetical really
  • I went in Tesco Ullapool recently to buy sandwiches, and yes, it is pretty small, the size local supermarkets used to be (and still are in, for instance, Central London), only in a modern building. No, I'm pretty sure they don't sell petrol! Petrol is expensive in the Highlands and Islands (more so than usual) beyond Dingwall (Tesco) and Alness (Morrisons). It would probably be even more expensive but for the fact that Asda (Elgin) have a national pricing policy for petrol. Tesco has several times been shamed in the local press for selling petrol dearer in Inverness/Dingwall (no Asda competition) than in Elgin. I'm not clear whether Morrisons have a national pricing policy or not, or if they work like Tesco and Esso, i.e. go with the cheapest local competition. I'm sure the good folk of Stornoway would love Teso to sell petrol, though!
  • Fuel prices in Lewis just now are £1.06 for unleaded and £1.16 for diesel - so yes, a Tesco fuel station would be great, so long as they don't join what appears to be a local cartel, allegedly ;)

20 years ago when I had a summer job up there all there was in Ullapool was a Prestos ...could have been a Safeway, was on the main Shore Street(I think) and a supermarket called MacDonalds SUpermarket and Cabar Craft Centre round the corner up the hill...is that place still going? Captains Cabin was always great for gifts. Changed days, loved it up there though.

    Captain's Cabin still going strong.
We now have a costcutters as well as really good market with local produce on Saturdays, but think that will be later on in the season.
