I'm confused now. My account has finally been opened and is now showing online but, as far as I can see, no Standing Order has been set up.

When I originally applied online I requested the SO to commence on 26th August. They were too slow to send the paperwork, so that date had already passed when I returned the forms. I amended the SO date on the paperwork to begin on 3rd September, I then heard nothing further until 6th September when I received a letter telling me that my account was open.

They obviously missed both requested SO dates, does this mean that I now don't qualify for the £50 cashback as technically an SO has not been set up?

    Thanks.
Time may be a great healer, but it's a lousy beautician.... :/

Have you checked with your bank to see if the SO has actually been set up? It could be that it has been set up, but as the requested date has passed that the next scheduled date is in October instead. If the SO has been set up, you can easily change the date to one of your choice, making sure that the payment's received by NatWest before the 4 October.

I haven't been into a branch, but surely if the SO had been set up it would be showing online? I'm just concerned as the T&Cs state: "To benefit from the cash incentive, you will need to set up a standing order of a minimum of £100 a month between 7 July 2008 and 6 September 2008, to start no later than 4 October 2008..."

Obviously I did attempt to set up the SO on two occasions before 6 September, but due to NatWest's incompetence it hasn't happened.

You would expect to see the SO online if set up. I would ring NatWest and tell them what has happened, and the implications with the £50 cashback. As you returned the completed SO, they should have passed it onto your bank. It did take a while for mine to be set up after NatWest sent the SO to my bank because they'd forgotten to enter the account number on it (not allocated when sent out to me for completion), so my bank had to get in touch with me to ask me what it was.

Exactly the same happened to me. They wouldn't discuss it with me before the 6th, as i had no activation code. Then today I have been put through to 6 departments. They said I had to open a Natwest current account in order to feed an esavings account, and that is all they had to say. so I think I will write and close the esavings account. One hand clearly doesn't know what the other is doing.

Well I've finally had my £1 cheque cashed but I have no idea where that leaves me in terms of the £50. I had a start date of the 15th Aug on the standing order form so it will be interesting to see if that is taken. I've also had nothing in writing since then last request for more documentation but as the cheque has been cashed, there must be an account somewhere with my name on it :)

I suspect I've got no chance but there is no harm in paying in £100 and then withdrawing it for the next 12 months. I can then argue if required.

We applied for an account for Mrs Anon at the same time as mine and my children - all of us aproved straight away but not Mrs Anon. We sent proof of identity as requested showing FULL FIRST NAME and SURNAME as indicated on their letter (sent Inland Revenue letter). Received a reply asking for proof of identity, showing FULL FIRST NAME - did again, this time with copies of bank statement and Equifax credit reference report confirming Mrs Anon is Mrs Anon ... received another reply asking for something that shows Mrs Anon's middle name as this was indicated on the application but is not stated on the Inland Revenue letter (again, letter includes a proof of address form that clearly asks for something to confirm FULL FIRST NAME and SURNAME, no mention of middle name). They have had this twice now, if they cannot prove your name from a credit search (which they have already done - squeeky clean, on the electoral role, have a mortgage at this address, etc), a bank stagement, a mortgage letter, a letter from the Inland Revenue (how many people of the same name and date of birth are likely to be living at the same address but with different middle names and accepted by Inland Revenue ...?!?!?!) then I give up - this is, remember, for a savings account (i.e. us putting money in!).

We give up - it is beyond the point where we can get the £50 now anyway, and we are not prepared to have to spend hours heading to the nearest branch for them to copy her passport and birth certificate.

If you apply (though promotion has now ended) and are asked for proof of identy, make sure it shows your middle name if you included this on your application.

Natwest rejected all my ID, so no £50 for me :(
We must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret and disappointment
  • Looks like my SO didn't set up properly either as they have no record of it. My spreadsheet says that it was set up for the 5th Sept

Having just spend 45 minutes on the phone to them (mostly on hold) the department that needs to speak to me isn't there today so they will phone me back tomorrow. I suspect the call will result in me cancelling the account though - unless they happen to 'find' my SO request.
