It requires an authoritarian regime, zero tolerance & the willingness to dump unrepentant anti-social sub-humans elsewhere, permanently*.

*.......unless anyone has any better ideas?

That sounds to me horribly like what the Germans were saying in the late 1920s....

"sub human" bothers me as a phrase. Becuase according to far too many people in the 20th century, OH (Jewish) and my son (half-Jewish) would be "sub human".

Some of the comments that follow are pretty accurate too, among them:

We are heading into a slump as bad as the Great Depression. But this time around, we have a feral and violent society that will not be pulling together to get out of this mess.

I wish the outlook wasn't so grim, even for those who had not participated in the financial scams of the last few years. Can anyone tell me anything (reliable) that will reassure me, i.e. by saying that the situation is not actually that bad?

There has been a lot of talk about 'worst since 1980s/1970s/1930s/14th century' and to be honest most of it is glib bull-poo written by people who should know better.

If oil prices stay at their current levels, the reduction in demand should mean that the UK is once again self-sufficient in oil, for a few years at least.

We have plenty of unused productive land that can be used for agriculture as does nearby continental Europe. We ain't gonna freeze and we ain't gonna starve.

By international standards we have a skilled, motivated and educated workforce. The wealth we have isn't going anywhere either. By that I don't mean monetary wealth but physical assets like roads, railways, telecom infrastructure etc. That can be used to earn a living even if it is a little less than one is used to.

So we can earn a living (if a little less than last year's), feed ourselves, we have plenty of housing so can put a roof over our heads and we still have families and loved ones around us. What more do you really need?

Well said that man/woman!:T Even if UK plc has been on abit of a spending spree a great deal of it has not been wasted. Many individuals have updated houses - rooves, windows, extensions, kitchens, etc. The Government has invested massively in new schools which really needed doing. Schools have never had it so good. All the things that we've bought still exist, maybe now they'll just seem more precious....;)

    Change my phrase then!

Ever had your front door kicked in by a bunch of yobs?

Poor lads just needed some understanding did they?

It's not a question of my thinking yobs are somehow OK.

I am just made very, very uneasy by a group of people - any group of people - being labelled as "sub human". It's not just a linguistic thing, either. If people are sub human, and we think of them thus, then there's nothing barred. That really does bother me.

Neverdespairgirl is exactly right - if you dehumanise people then it makes it all too easy to commit the most appalling atrocities against them.

This is how the Natzi regime were able to persuade seemingly decent people to take part in the most barbaric acts of genocide. The same thing happened in Sebronitsa in Bosnia in the 90s, and if I may say so LisbonLaura, it was probably how those thugs were able to kick your door in - they did not consider the terrifying effect that their action would have on a fellow human being.

If we go down that road we are lost.

We have been going down that road for some time now - have you noticed how the media has been treating Moslems and Arabs over the last decade (started even before 2001)? They are now characterised as irrational nutters wanting nothing more than to blow us (and themselves) up at the drop of a hat.

Makes it much easier to invade their countries to nick their oil and gives the masses at home something to be afraid of whilst the governments take away our liberties in the name of 'keeping us safe' from a danger that's less likely to kill us than being run over when crossing the road.

Every pound less borrowed (to buy a house) is more than two pounds less to repay and more than three pounds less to earn, over the course of a typical mortgage.
