Spikey Orange contract users are not charged for 0800 or 0808 numbers. But you must be on an Orange tariff and not one of their OVP(Orange Value Promise) tariffs. Therefore you can use 18866.com via their 0800 access on your Orange phone and you wont be charged for the call and you wont lose any of your free minute bundle either. So long as Orange don't realise that you are using the number for onward dialling, or as they call it, "calling card services". If they do realise what you're doing they will charge you at standard rates and the call minutes will come out of your bundle.

Numbers starting 0844 are a different matter and Orange will tariff specifically for using them. They can cost upto 30p per minute.
  • any o8 numbers are not free on 3.they will come out of your minutes & after 3 months you wil have a hugh bill for those calls. £60 to be exact, for me.
if you take an orange OVP plan for any 02 tariff, then you get 0845, 0870, 0800 free out of your free minutes.

Are you certain about 0845, 0870, 0800 being part of inclusive minutes on orange OVP tariffs? I thought o2 also included 0844 as part of their inclusive minutes? If yes, then does this apply to orange OVP again?

Orange do not replicate 0870 or 0844 on OVP. See the following extract from their price list:

There are some call charges that Orange do not replicate. These include, and are not limited to calls to premium rate numbers, calls to personal rate numbers, calls to 0844 numbers, calls to 0871 numbers, calls made whilst roaming abroad, and calls made to
international destinations. For details of these and other charges, please see the relevant sections of this booklet, or contact customer services on 150.
  • Looks like Orange customer services barely know what they are talkin about then; did call them up last week regarding the same issue i.e. 0870 and 0844 and two representatives confirmed that 0870 and 0844 would be included in the EQ o2 Leisure Tariff. Means I can't call home using that then! :(

Jus as a btw, which of the numbers below do o2 have as inclusive in their minutes then so that I can decide on if they serve my needs better than orange

    0845, 0844, 0870, 0871, 0800

    Ne replies appreciated!

I suggest that you email Orange and ask them to write the facts down. Then if you do use these numbers after they tell you that they are inclusive within the bundle, then you can tell them that they themselves advised you that these numbers were inclusive, and of course, you would be able to cite their written proof. Then they would have to refund any charges you incurred.

They have different tariffs for these types of numbers depending on whether you are a PAYG customer, a Talk Plan customer or a Your Plan customer. I'm not surprised that they give differing stories. I don't know how they cope with their own tariffing. They used to be excellent at publishing their full tariff. Sadly, there are lots of hidden nasties now and you have to dig deep to find them, then when you do find them it's often the case that there is ambiguity.

Regarding your question about o2 tariffing, it will probably be dependent on which of their tariffs you are on.
  • Don't think 0844 are free anymore!

My inclusive minutes renewed on the 22nd of this month, and they don't seem to have gone down after using an 0844 number yesterday and today!!

I did read somewhere that from 3rd November, 3 would be charging for 0844 numbers. I think they are applying this to everybody once their new monthly billing period starts!
  • i am on orange OVP o2 400 tariff. i get 0800, 0870 & 0845 free for telestunt,18866 & others, out of my free 400 minutes for the last 7 months.
