Same happened to me 6 or so weeks ago & haven't gone near SP3 since (Dell 9200). At least it made me go out & get a good back up & boot solution - Acronis True Image 11.

Similar happened to me when I first installed it. Was just the common AMD problem. Safe mode, disable intel driver, reboot, install SP3. No need for drastic restores if that's the cause of the problem.

superscaper, exactly the same thing happened to my neighbour, her she installed sp3 as it was on automatic update and install.
when it rebootted the computer just wouldnt go anywhere.
the recovery disc was never supplied by dell as they have their own one built into which meant my neighbour would have lost all her pictures.

After a few weeks of calling Dell did eventually send a recovery disc for free although they did try and ask for £25 the second time I rang chasing for it.

From this she was able to at least recover her pictures then did a clean installation, so for those with HP / Dell computers if you do not have a recovery disc demand one and they will send it.

I think the HP/Dell computers were particularly prone to the problem I had (I don't have either, mine's a self build). But very simple solution to get SP3 installed as I described.

Antispam, it's not Home or Pro that's the issue (I have Pro), it only affects OEM copies of XP in combination with having various AMD processors. There were a couple of other issues with specific motherboards etc but the main problem is as I described.

Things are even simpler now as MS have released a fix for you to install if you don't have an Intel processor BEFORE installing SP3. I think it basically does automatically what I described manually.

Decided to install SP3 as it surprisingly appeared in Windows Update today.

All worked ok, except..... no WiFi connection !!

Seems like it does not like my DLink DWL-G510 wireless card.

Performed a system restore, all back ok now.

Just found SP3 drivers for G510, so might have another go !!

I was told that SP2 was a major change in the XP operating system. Is SP3 a major change or minor bug fixes?
Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems :( Well at least i learn something on the way :D

The only difference that I noticed was that my wireless network no longer worked !!!

My system is fully up to date with all other Windows updates, so there was not a lot to add.

    According to MS:

Windows® XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) includes all previously released updates for the operating system. This update also includes a small number of new functionalities, which do not significantly change customers’ experience with the operating system.

So the BSOD issues I had with my Intel core 2 duo Dell 9200 could be motherboard related?
