Unfortunately the Clinique SAs are paid to think that every Clinique product is perfect and that if something says, e.g. it's for oily skin, it will definitely work on your oily skin. This is not always the case!

Example: The 3 step system. This is so well advertised it's usually the 1st thing people go for. All the SAs are extremely well-versed in reccommending you products, but all they're really doing is reading the blurbs on the boxes, which you could do yourself. The system is such a success because it seems so simple: wash, tone and moisturise with these and only these products and then your skin will be perfect .

    Wash
For years, the only option was bar soap, which (even though it's made by clinique ) is a completely outdated way to wash your face. It's just common knowledge that soap makes the skin tight and dry, and clinique's is no different. Now they've moved onto liquid facial soaps which are much better because they don't contain any detergent cleansing ingredients and as such are gentle to the skin.

The exception to this is the oily skin forumla which contains menthol, which is a tested skin irritant (link). Only, if you went for a skin consultation with oily skin the SA would happily tell you to use the oily skin formula, and I doubt she would even know about the menthol.

    Tone
I see some people have noticed the clarifying lotion to not be all it's cracked up to be, and I'm really not surprised it's given people such bad reactions. Between the 4 "specially formulated... custom-fit" Clarifying lotions, there is barely any difference in the ingredients, these are the main ones in formula 1:
    • Water
    • Alcohol Denat. There's no two ways about it: denatured alcohol is drying and irritating for the skin. Don't get me wrong, you may have used products with this in and not felt anything but a tingle, but this just means your skin is strong and healthy enough to fight it off, but it certainly isn't making it any better.
    • Glycerin A good moisturising ingredient which could go some way to reverse the damage done by the alcohol.
    • Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) A major player in the Anti-Blemish range (along with alcohol which is why I would not recommend this range) which can be a good antioxidant which is great - BUT it contains lots of alcohol and for that reason I would avoid it.
This is in a formula recommended for dry to very dry skin! Dry skin finds it harder to heal itself so the last thing it needs is alcohol drying it out and irritating it!

The exception (as there usually is with clinique, which makes it more confusing) is the Mild Clarifying Lotion which doesn't contain any alcohol or other irritants, and can exfoliate the skin.

    Moisturise
There are only 2 options for this, the Dramatically Different Moisturising Lotion (if you have dry skin) and Dramatically Different Moisturising Gel for oilier skins. I have said this before, but the Lotion is not dramatic or different! It doesn't contain any irritants, but what it does contain is cheap, standard oils (inc. vaseline), colours and preservatives and is definitely not worth the money! Yes, it will moisturise, but so will any other moisturiser from nivea, olay etc. who wouldn't charge this much.
The Gel is different, and is recommended as it contains antioxidants and anti irritants (as I said in an earlier post, the men's version is exactly the same ingredients and cheaper). Incidentally, it has 3 times as many ingredients as the gel, which is an instant indicator of a more advanced formula - some of the best and most expensive clinique moisturisers have 50+ ingredients!

So, I suppose what I'm trying to say is that some of the Clinique products are good and some really aren't, but when you have the consultation you'll be told a lot of simplified information (though strangely, not much about the actual ingredients ) and be stuck with whatever products the advertising dept at Clinique have said are 'good for your type of skin'.

I'm really sorry for going on, but I could write an essay on clinique (as I have done before on here! :o) but I just don't want people to get sucked in by what the skin care 'experts' at Clinique tell you.

Thanks for writing this, I found it an interesting read!

The anti-blemish clarifying lotion does sometimes make my skin feel quite dry, but saying that, I have been trying out so many different products for acne skin over the years, and only recently has my skin started to calm down. Maybe it's because I'm now 22 and it's starting to calm down whilst I've coincidentally started using Clinique??
The only thing I need now is to help fight tiny little (but many many of them!) acne scars and open pores.
Just bought alot of Clinique's Anti-Blemish stuff to :(

  • My buggy is a bugaboo chameleon (v generous gift from my mother after DS was born at 29 weeks) which is great if you walk a lot like I do, it's built like a tank and can load ridiculous amount of shopping on it without worrying it will tip up. I would highly recommend getting one secondhand, I certainly intend to sell mine when DS grows out of it. It is a pain for putting in the car though so now that DS is going into his bigger car seat I have just got a Maclaren Triumph from .com which is much easier for tossing into the car but lousy for shopping - DS still only 19lb so changing bag, feeding stuff and one boots shopping bag is all I can manage

I've got to pick a parcel up at sorting office, not ordered anything lately so I've either won something :j or it's some baby wipes from a survey BORING

think a buggaboo and a phil and teds are the only 2 pushchairs i havent had but would love to try lol

anyone know if the expert glitch ill still be working on tuesday ?? could do with some more lol:rotfl:
im not allowed to say what i think so ner!:p
  • Wow you lot can't half talk! :rotfl:

I go away for 3 days and took me 2 days to catch up with the thread! Dam having to go to work which totally interrupted me!

I would like to thank everyone who sent me good wishes for my Dad's
operation on Tuesday, it went well and he is up and about and feels great :j

Just sorted out my coupons and recycled 2 haircare tillspits

Looking at the new photo till spit, I wonder if it could be used in conjunction with the mag voucher for "free digital photos worth £1.50" and/or "10 free digital photos" from a mailing?

Off to boots in a bit as OH tells me I must get the no7 GWP :D

    What is the mitchum offer?

Mitchum Antiperspirant deodorant in 150ml cans has been reduced from £1.99 to 53p a can.

The offer is on the fragrance free and powder fresh. As after the person in front of me got them I left the queue and went and had a look.

    Yours

It makes me so mad they have mentioned she is a grammer school girl, and her parents profession. It shouldnt matter where she is from, or who her parents are.

All children are precious.I really wouldnt want to be a teen again, in this political climate
    :T
Agree wholeheartedly. So grammar school girls wouldn't dream of stealing a nail varnish obviously. (I know in this case she didn't but I too am mad at the implication inferred. How do we fight the stereotypes if the berluddy media wont try to just report news! )

I agree that I would have thought a stern reprimand would have been a little more appropriate in the circumstances and/or a sign put up if a particular store suffers more instances than the norm. However, I am also fed up of grubby displays and all of the Toni and Guy sets are ripped to bits in Chester too! As for the Clearance stand, well I know it's clearance but does that automatically mean you want to be covered in sticky, gloopy *god knows what* that is smeared all over the stand. I don't think I am particularly blessed with the ability to replace lids so surely everyone can manage this feat. :rotfl: Ugh.
    And breathe... :D

    Palice,
Thanks for taking the time to give me info on the All about eyes stuff. Typical that they put the decent stuff into glass isnt it! I seem to be getting on quite well with L'Oreal Derma Genesis at the moment, both the day and night creams, my skin is far more radiant than when I used the Clinique. As for the No 7 P & P, I've decided after a few attempts that my skin just will not tolerate it. The day cream is easier on my skin than the serum, I end up with little white spots just under the skin each time I try the serum - what causes this Palice? (sorry everyone, this is my personal beauty therapist thread not Boots :o:D Still it may help someone else)

Anyone looking at the current offers on Botanics and wondering whether to bother, I def would. LOL. So far everything Ive had Botanics wise has been great. I love the 3 min conditioning cream (reminds me to get some more now you can get points on it again, cant you?) and also some gorgeous body cream I found reduced.
