    Hi,

I've started applying online for the Halifax Clarity credit card. In the application form, under 'optional information', it asks for my bank sort code, account number and how long I've held my account.

Does anyone know whether not providing this information will mean I might get a worse APR or credit limit for the card? Incidentally, my main current account is not with the Halifax.

To answer my own question ... I rang the Halifax. The lady I spoke to was surprised it's marked as 'optional' as they need this info to run the credit check. They need your bank details whether or not your bank account is with the Halifax.

Rubbish - no one needs bank details to do a credit check (Name, DOB & 3 years address history). More likely to set up a direct debit.

I've been a long user of Nationwide - their Visa for CC purchases and their debit card for cash withdrawals. Of course that's all changed now.

The Halifax Clarity looks like the best bet for CC purchases, but I can't quite tell what's best for cash withdrawals. Is it still the same Clarity card, the point being that immediate interest will always HAVE to be paid from now? I'll always be paying off in full.

Or do I stick to the Nationwide Debit (which seems pricey)?

The Clarity credit card will be the better card for cash withdrawals from 1 November. If you get the typical rate of 12.9% that equates to 1% a month interest which starts accruing as soon as you withdraw the cash. However, if you pay it off in full, including the interest, after a 2 week holiday it should only cost 0.5%.

You should probably also use the Clarity CC for purchases as it has a "perfect" exchange rate whereas the Nationwide CC has a 1% Visa fee loading.
  • Thanks! I guess free and perfect ATM cash is in the past now, but I guess 0.5% isn't too bad :)

The Cumberland Building Society's current account gives free debit card and ATM use worldwide "So you can withdraw cash at ATMs and pay for goods in shops where you see the Visa sign anywhere in the world and we won't charge you or pass on any fees levied by Visa. The Cumberland does not charge you to use your Cumberland card but the provider of an ATM or retailer may apply a charge."

Yep - but you need an address in their branch area to qualify for the account.

    Dear jpmcc or other memebers

I tried to open their wesite,
http://www.cumberland.co.uk/current-accounts,there is no reference that there is not any Loading Fee for forign transaction as well as ATM withdrawal overseas. If this is true than this could be a perfect subtitute for NW a/c ....

Well I can see it there as plain as anything. Suggest you read it again more carefully. Footnote 6.

You've even quoted it so you must have seen it

    Dear Dzug1

I could see it now, you have increased the size of my spectacles which is already high based on the normal standard. I will open the new thread to learn from people experience. I will then could decide whether this is a subsitute for NW a/c. I coudl estimate, it could save me about £200 a year for foreign spending.

wELL, Thank you again keep reply my posting, remind me if it is illegal, such as acquire unused train ticket :-))
