I would say the caxton card looks best for me - to buy a euro card to use in a non-euro country is pointless - I would be using it for ATMs in Spain, so 0 fees would be good - the wife & I generally take out €20 - €70 at a go.

Our Nationwide Flexaccounts could cost up to 9% on this model (up from 0%).:eek::eek:

Not due to go for a while, so advice welcome - we do have NW CC, but don't like taking passports everywhere (hence ATMs preferred) - is passport still required with a prepaid card in Spain?

Any chance of a calculator Martin?

    Can anyone please help?

I have just applied for a Halifax Clarity Credit Card. If I load it with £1000 and then use it to withdraw £1000 in cash while I'm abroad will I get charged any interest at all?

Good question - yes, I think you will - the £1000 will not cover the £1000 + fees.

Pedantic I know, but true. EDIT - OOPS - just saw no fees, but the below will still apply.

Bigger question, will they let you hold a positive balance?

I have held a positive balance on credit cards before when I have bought something, paid off the balance immediately and then decided to take the item back so then had the cost refunded to my credit card.

There shouldn't be any fees as the Halifax Clarity card doesn't charge any fees other than cash withdrawl interest.

Lets assume I only spent £800 - would I get charged interest on cash withdrawls with my account being in credit?

No, I'd say that there is no legal right to do so - if they let you have a positive balance, it effectively pays the advance off immediately.

If this is the case, it would make it the perfect card and Martin's article should be updated. Anyone going to give it a go ?

    If they enforce their T&C:

You must not make payments or transfer funds from another credit or store card to your account that would leave a credit balance on your account. We may return any funds that exceed the balance owing on your account to the account from which the money was sent.

then yes you will pay interest because there won't be a credit balance.

Depends on whether (and how quickly) they send the money back.

I am going away to kenya for 2 weeks and then to Germany/Austria/Italy for a couple of weeks. I have a current account with RBS and a tesco clubcard mastercard. I am totally confused about how to sort out my money- my trip to kenya is my current priority although i'm only back for 2 days between trips. Do I get a pre-paid travel credit card and load up with cash from my current account and use my mastercard for other purchases? Will I be able to use a travel card to withdraw cash in Kenya if needed? Should I just take currency and traveller's cheques and use mastercard for other transactions (it is on a 0% for 1 year on purchases). If I am taking travellers cheques what currency should I take- euros, dollars or sterling, I seem to be getting conflicting advice. I am really confused by all of this and I am worried as it's only 9 days until I leave, I didn't realise the horrendous charges I would incur by using my RBS visa debit card abroad.
