What credit cards and debit cards does he have?

Santander 123 credit and debit cards.

Santander 123 debit card gets you the Visa rate from Santander ATMs (sure they have a branch checker on their site), make sure you hit the 'Without Conversion' button...

First screen after you've entered PIN and Amount required gives you the option to be charged in Pounds (bad) or Euros (good) - normally bottom left button to be charged in Euros ('W/Out Conversion').

I believe that a Santander 123 customer who pays in at least £500 per month pays no charges for withdrawals if made at a Santander ATM - is this correct?

Yes - anywhere in Spain. I don't think they are branded as Santander these days (EuroDosh or something), so you need one bolted to a Santander branch.

Hoping someone can give me some advice to pass n to my Dad who is going to Spain next Thursday for 2 weeks (short notice, only found out yesterday) and I am trying to find how best for him to handle his money. He is 76 and not stupid or having any problems with his mind etc. but nothing too complicated is his preference.

He doesn't have an Android phone so I know that Revolut and the likes are a no no. He plans to take some cash but also wants to be able to access cash whilst in Spain (I know he won't want to purchase goods and services on a credit card) so what are his best options?

Is a prepaid travel his best choice?

    Thanks.

Forst of all there is no need for him to even have a Smartphone for Revolut. You can do the sign up with yours. The account isn't linked to your phone, you can access his account from any compatible Smartphone.
    He just needs the card.
But it's seems that he may be able to use his Santander card with Santander ATMs anyway.
Another option would be the Metro Bank debit card which he can get on the spot in any of their branches.
Then he wouldn't be limited when it comes to ATM usage.

None in our part of the country.

I see that the 1|2|3 credit card has no overseas fees for purchases until the end of the year, so that should also be useful for him:

No foreign transaction fees on purchases abroad
Use your 1|2|3 Credit Card abroad until 31 December 2016 and you won't be charged any foreign transaction fees on purchases when paying in the local currency.

I would avoid using we swap. The card worked fine when abroad, but when I came home and tried to get a refund of the money that was left, they "unloaded" the card but never paid the money into my bank account. Customer service is basically useless ...
  • Why does Ramsdens not show up in MSEs exchange rate comparison?

They were the best deal and I would have not got it if I had just followed the MSE exchange rate comparison.
