Generally to keep your ears open at work, down the pub, amongst the family and to listen out for people that are going soon and to sell the Euros direct.

Keep an eye on your local bureau de change and wait until the pound weakens and the rate gets close to the rate that you bought them at.

So I have a halifax debit card. But surely for cash it is not quite the card from hell, compared to some others, if I get out enough cash each time I withdraw abroad.
Since it is a fixed charge of £1.50 each time, where as many others are 1.5 or 2%, I can beat the charges of most by getting out over a £100 worth of foreign currency each time (assuming I need that much).
But a Nationwide card does of course sound much better, however in the current economic climate is it a safe place to have money and will the zero-cost withdrawals continue?

No worse off in Nationwide than Halifax! In the "current climate" ANYTHING can happen! Who cares if the free withdrawals will continue or not...enjoy them now!
  • Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone could give me some advice, I am off to Fuerteventura in 3 weeks but both myself and my hubby bank with the halifax so we won't be taking our debit cards with us. We would normally take travellers cheques but are contemplating getting a Fairfx card.

I can't decide which option would be best so any help would be appreciated!

    Thanks.:j

Fairfx states on their website, at the moment, that a debit card gives you 1.2245. This might be true for cards with fees etc but it is no where near the 1.27 visa wholesale rate that you will get with a Nationwide debit card right now. The Fairfx card only gives you 1.25 at the moment.

I would go to Nationwide and open an account, you should have your card within 3 weeks.
  • Thanks very much:j
  • Hi, i am going to NYC in 3 weeks with work and wanted to take advantage of the weak dollar ($1.71) as we speak. I wanted to spend about £1000 on my card and maybe lift some cash, $200,while i was there. I have the 6 months interest free offer as i have only just got the card. I plan to pay it off over 4 months. Can anyone tell me if this is a good idea? I keep reading about cash withdrawal interest on the abbey zero but dont understand. Can anyone shed some light?
