  • if you have two loos, alter one of the ballcocks to do a small flush then tell everyone, this loo is for wee wee's! it'll save gallons of water if your on a meter, if you are not able to make this adjustment fill a plastic bottle with water and lay it in the bottom of the cistern.
You can use nearly spent batteries (eg from a torch that is dim etc) in remote controls for ages.

I know this is a money saving website but some of you seriously need to get out more and/or get a life.

You can't take it with you.

At your funeral do you want people to say "What a nice man/woman" or "What a tight git that was"?

I think tips saving real money are useful..........heating up toothpaste to get a dribble out.....................:rotfl:

If I need to print an email such as a flight ticket I always cut and paste the bits i need into a word doc. That way I avoid having to print adverts and colour. If the print is coloured i also change it to black. I have never had any problems with using it, as most companies are just interested in the ticket number ect.

I also do the poo things, but mainly to save time! Busy working mum and its so quite at work!

Don't buy sandwich bags, reuse your bread bags. Enjoy the admiring comments of your fellow lunch eaters as you explain you are recycling a previously used plastic bag! How green is that! and saves cash at the same time.....
  • My tip not only saves money but most importantly "TIME".

This may sound SAD but it works,

When buying socks, always purchase more than one pair at a time, and buy socks with some design pattern on them. ie socks with
    • Coloured toes
    • Coloured heels
    • or stripes etc
When one sock developes a hole simply throw it away, leaving you with one and a half pair of socks. When another hole appears or disappears into the black hole that socks go to, you still have a pair.

It also saves time after washing as pairing them up is so much easier than trying to pair up plain socks.

We use indian soapnuts for washing with - they work out about one sixth the cost of traditional wash powders/liquids. To add a nice smell a few drops of essential oil works fine. Soapnuts are natural so no harnful chemicals going into the environment and they can be put on the compost heap when used so no waste. They can also be used for many other washing type applications such as shampoo for hair or car, bodywash, dishwashing (machine or hand). Help the environment and save money.
I always keep my eyes open for energy saving exhibitions because they always hand out a few of the really good quality low energy light bulbs. Every light in our house is low energy.
I put tap water into a bottle and leave it overnight, depending on your water quality it takes between 2 and 4 hours for the additives etc to leach out and its every bit as good (and tasty) as bottled water that costs a fortune.
A friend of mine (no not me) always uses the lavatory at work/public so that he rarely has to buy toilet paper for home. He says that its a bad month if he gets through a twin pack of toilet rolls at home.
Being on a water meter I use the bath water for watering the garden with, as long as you don't use it on stuff you're going to eat its usually fine. I just jam a hosepipe into the bath and syphon it out. Saves a small fortune and beats any hosepipe ban as its not connected to a water supply.

It's a useful thing to have in mind... I'm hoping to be thought of at my funeral as both nice AND thrifty (as my cardboard home-decorated coffin goes past!)

Sometimes I do feel a bit anal about the extremes I go to, but for me it's more about not wasting stuff (warm water, envelopes whatever) - a happy by-product of which is that I get to save money. Then that 'saved' money can go towards stuff I'd rather my money went on.

My hubby thinks it's a waste of money hiring kids' DVDs (rather than buying cheaply)... but if I hire them from the library, I feel my money is going somewhere useful. So I prefer to think of it not as being tight, but as being mindful of where my money/the world's resources are going to...

Use holed/laddered pop socks as paint strainers. Tie up the holed area and use by stretching over a home made funnel made from a plastic bottle with the bottom cut off to combine nearly empty paint tins (same colour) then stirr up and you have virtually zero waste paint that would have otherwise just dried up at the bottom of the can. The strainer keeps bits of old dried flakey paint from getting through etc
  • hi i have purchased a 300 watt inverter [converts 12 volts dc to 240 volt ac] for around £30 it has twin household sockets so i now charge my laptop, pda, digital camera and mobile phone and even use a 12 volt powered AA/AAA battery charger to charge remote control or other batteries while i drive. This aters fuel economy by a miniscule amount and saves my electric at home. PLEASE REMOVE VALUEBLE ITEMS FROM PARKED CARS . Cheers steve

I always get the very last bits from my tubes by running a toothbrush handle alon the tube from the bottom upwards. Its amazing how much extra you get to use

I always open the oven door after cooking to let the heat into the house

I add soda crystals to my washing powder. Thus useng less powder and keeping my pipes clear of limescale

Always microwave my water for 1 or 2 cups of tea/coffee Heat for 1 min on high

Only wash when I have full loads. As there are only 2 of us I sometimes have to wait a while for white loads

I always brush my teeth with the hot water still coming out of the cold tap . (I have mixer taps. )So always wash face first. This helps as I have senstive teeth and cold water sometimes reallys plays them up. Also does a bit of water saving

Water the plants in the morning with my water taken to bed the night before

    Thats it for now
