Anyone found a decent vaccuum cleaner?

We bought a Hoover 1900W Dust Manager Cyclonic with Pets HEPA filter because we have 3 cats and a dog and a mixture of laminate, lino and carpet floors and we thought it was a good choice. I got fed up with the Dyson we had and was happy when it finally died - but I want it back now, because this new one is a pile of carp! I am so damn annoyed, having just taken 2hrs to hoover the upstairs and stairs of a 3 bed semi because of it!
- It falls over at the drop of a hat when you are using the hose and the attachments - whether you are doing the stairs or on the same level as the hoover itself!
- The power cable isn't long enough - I had to change power sockets to do the upstairs - we do NOT live in a mansion, just a medium sized semi.
- The attachment loses power as you go up the stairs - you can actually hear it.
- It DOES NOT reach the edges no matter how hard you try! Not side on, not front on.
- It has a pet hair removal head which, when on its storage point, makes the body too wide for you to run the hoover close to a wall without bashing the attachment!
- The pedal to release the body is temperamental, and I don't think it's that ours is dodgy - I think it's badly designed!
- The 'bag' is about the size of a box of eggs so has to be emptied halfway round the house with all our pets!
- And to cap it all off nicely it recommends that you remove and wash and clean 3 filters every 5th time you use the hoover!:eek:
I am so annoyed I nearly threw the damn thing out the window when it fell over for the 30th time! I do little enough cleaning as it is without risking going insane every time I get the hoover out! Has ANYONE managed to find a vacuum cleaner that would be able to cope with the conditions I've described above?!

I'm not exactly a heavy vacuum user - but I can remember a Which best buy which people on this site also seemed to like - the Miele S5210, I think it's the Cat and Dog model but unsure. I did a comparison site and then got it from www.24electric.com (via Quidco for cashback); cost £118 with £3.54 cashback.
I've had it nearly a year (22nd June 07) and still not changed the bag (but live alone, no animals). Personally I would never have another bagless vacuum cleaner with having to clean it so often!
Good luck, perhaps do a search on Miele on this site and see what other people thought of it. It's also not an upright, which I personally prefer, and it's light to cart about.

I dont have pets but have a miele also, had it a year, three bed house and changed the bag twice.

I can vouch for Dyson - we have the 'seperated' model - not the tall integrated one that is quite common. Works great!0

I've had a Sebo x4 for a few months now & pretty happy with it - the only thing is you have to put a separate hose on to do the stairs, unlike my dyson but the dyson kept breaking down0

Another vote for Miele. Not the cheapeset but streets ahead of the others.0

Ha ha ha! I was so angry that I sent the list of problems to Hoover and they have just phoned me back to try to explain/deal with the faults. Very nice of them but not really any help.
Tried to explain away all the 'faults' that I mentioned and offered to send out an engineer to look at the faulty foot button thing. The girl seriously couldn't grasp that I just thought the machine was carp and badly designed!
Edit: we used to have a Dyson and I hated it. It was heavy and blew more around than it picked up. OH wanted to pay £300 for the new one! No way, Jose! £300 on a hoover. However, am now thinking maybe we should have done!If you have nothing constructive to say just move along.0 -
i love my dyson! 3 years old and the suction is still fab- we have a house rabbit who leaves tufts of hair around, and a lot of visitors walking through and the dyson deals with it no problemo. my mums dyson is about 7 years old, my sisters about the same and they work fine too- the big plus for me is the extension cable is so loooong! im in a medium semi too and can do the whole of each floor on one plug.0

Hi not sure if you have found a replacement but hope this might help! I use hoovers a lot as i work part time as a cleaner and we have a cat at home and i am a childminder so a dirty floor most of the time!! Even though we have only carpets in the halls and the stairs i needed a decent hoover after our vax one gave me stress like you have described!!
On here and if you search for 'bissell' there is a thread r.e a reconitioned hoover which retails at £200 but is £39..absolutely fab and i have used some hooves i can tell you..better than our 2 £200 ones at work aswell..even df commented when i asked him to hoover the rug the other day at how great it is..and this is coming from a man lol..hope you manage to get one either way but just thoughtt hat might help.
