Have you checked megatrain/megabus? http://www.megatrain.com/uk/ They list Nottingham and Chesterfield as options if either are close enough?
  • Cabs in town will be very expensive because you'll hit traffic - a one-day travelcard (zone 1/2 will most likely do). What don't you like about the tube? Once you get the hang of which line you need, and it's often only one or two, you just need to remember north/south/east/west :D

£28k is more than many in London earn, it's certainly a fair salary to live on. You said the company was about 4 miles from Kings Cross - does that put them closer to North London? That will generally make rentals cheaper in that area - and you could always ride a bike to work! Check out http://www.thinkproperty.com/renting.htm for some rental prices.

Edit: Re the expenses, not sure how to ask for that. I would probably pursue it as far as the jobcentre, for me personally I might be dubious about asking a potential employer in case they took offence!

Another thing to remember is that if you are considering a job in London, other areas are opening up for you - who knows what opportunites may come of a wider cast of the net?!

Post code is SE1 - that's not North is it...?

    On the Albert Embankment.

    My London geography is rubbish.

OK I'll try the tube; just wanted to be fresh as a daisy as possible after drive to station and train journey.

Thank you for that; Chesterfield would be do-able, Nottingham less so.
    The prices are fantastic!
The times don't work so well though........

Commuting in from North London to SE1 isn't as awful as it seems I used to go from just outside North London to Elephant and Castle every day it took about an hour. Generally housing costs are a wee bit cheaper to the North and North East of London or so I have found.

You should go for two reasons

    a) good interview practice
    b) if you were offered the job or got good feedback even if you weren't offered, it would be good for your confidence.

These two hold true even if you decided you could not take the job on.

Don't worry! SE1 is actually central London - it's just the other side of the river from the Houses of Parliament! (Between Waterloo and Vauxhall train stations) Very easy to get to.

    Hiya Got2change

I have followed this thread and I am in agreement with everyone else - you should go!!!

As for whether you wish to move to London or not that is up to you, but most London comapnies offer a season ticket loan if you are travelling by train, so that may well help you in the long run. Re the travelling, if you are getting the fast train every day then all of them have wifi on them, so you may be able to negotiate shorter days and work on the train, so not having to worry about moving just yet.

Short term, hassle the job centre! They are supposed to give you every avaialble assistance to attend interviews, so they should help you, whether it will be a rail warrant or refund on tickets I dont know, but nag someone until they tell you.

Life has a way of kicking you up the bum just when you are not expecting it and taking you down a completely different path so go for it! You sound like you have a really good chance of getting this job and you would enjoy it

    Good luck ;)

You will never know what you may be able to achieve unless you TRY!

No good sitting for the next six months wondering what if I'd gone to the interview, what if I'd got the job....

TRY and then you will find out if you get offered the job and not have to spend your life wondering ;)
