Thanks for this Lil-me, I am on IB and higher rate mobility of DLA and trust me I am not well off! Dr Dragon has been put on SSP and we have just applied for CTB and IS, we have some savings but if Dr Dragon does not get another job (he is trying to get another job as the one he is in is killing him - he is being bullied and there is a family history of heart attack, his father, grandfather and uncle all died from heart attacks and that is both sides of the family) we will lose the house (and we went for an affordable mortgage only 3.5 times Dr Dragon's salary), I cannot afford my prescriptions for pain killers (which I need to take in order to function) and more importantly I cannot afford to buy my epi-pens that I need for my nut allergy.

I would love to be off benefits and working again but at the moment that is not going to happen - I need to fill out yet another form (trying to get the care component of DLA as I can no longer make myself food so when Dr Dragon is not here I do not eat), I am scared though that they will take away the DLA and IB I already get if I apply (this happened to a friend of mine)

Would a pre-payment certificate for prescriptions help? My husband has difficulty with getting food if I am not around so I always have 'ready meals ', otherwise known as leftovers in the freezer so all he has to do is put it in the microwave. There are sandwiches in the freezer as well. I have been away for a couple of days at a time and this has worked well.

In the meantime, it may be worth your while buying a pre-paid perscription certificate and you can pay this monthly via direct debit. This could save you alot of money on regular perscriptions.

With regards to eating, you could make extra the night before and just re-heat in the MW or have your OH make you a pack lunch before he goes out etc and a flask. Thats what my OH does occasionally if he has to go out and I have no one to stay with me.

You may also be entitled to an assessment from Social Services to see if you qualify for help at home whilst your OH is at work.

If you have full backing from your GP/consultants etc, then informing DLA and reciving the care component shouldnt be too much hard work.

    Good Luck.

We actually worked out that a pre-paid prescription would work out more expensive! I am JUST under the number of prescriptions that make it worthwhile

We don't have a microwave, OH does leave sandwiches if he has time (at the moment he is off sick so I am getting a decent lunch each day AND losing weight!)

They got me a tilt stool and a wheelchair and told me I had to manage! (what I have discovered I can do is make a bowl of soup and then sit on the kitchen floor to eat it followed by crawling through to somewhere I can pull myself up - SS said there was no-one available to help me during the day though)

    Hi dragon.

When you had your assessment, what did they assess your needs as [there are four criteria]?

The booklet they left with me after my assessment suggested that they only offer help if you come under two of the four, but you can appeal their decision.

Did the OH thereapist see how you managed to feed yourself during the day?

It's a shame you were told you had to manage.

Can you not place the tilt stool by where you make your soupso you don't have to sit on the floor?

Definitely think about appealing, as even with a few more adaptions, it can make all the difference to how you manage your day. I've had things like plug sockets raised, for example, and they really do help.

You can apply for a grant to have adaptions or alterations made too - your LHA should have a booklet called disabled facilities grant. Some grants are mandatory, some are discretionary, but you also have the right to appeal the outcome of your application.

The filling out of forms can be tedious, but if it's for something that can benefit or improve your life, it's worthwhile. I know how you feel, as I seem to have been filling in forms non stop lately! It is worth it in the end though.

Dragon - have you filled in an HC! form to see if you can get help with prescriptions?

Depending on what you're on, it might be cheaper to buy them over the counter.

I would definitely join up with Freecycle as there are always microwaves being given away and would make your life so much easier.

Believe me I totally understand where you are coming from with regards the dificulties you are having.

If your care levels have increased since the last assessment, you should contact your local SS for another one and have some kind of careplan in place. If you are not happy, request another from another OT etc.

With regards to the perscription charges, you could ask your GP to give you an extra couple of months supplys as a perscription is charged per items no matter the quantity.

Nobody should have to sit on the floor to eat a meal because of their disabilites. Please ask for help! Extra help would also help your husband with caring as he isnt well either.

Try and keep your chin up and if you would like to PM me...please do.

    Take care.

Ah we gave ours away to a friend setting up her flat as there is no where for it in our kitchen!

They saw me about two months ago and because I needed no more kit (bannisters, bath, chairs) they said I could manage and took me off their listings

Hmm possibility especially if I get the Income Support! Mind you one of the tablets I don't think I will be taking any more as it made me physically ill. (Voltarol)

I told the SS this and they sort of shrugged it off!

    Hiya!

Hope you have a good holiday.

Voltarol-You can take this anally (sp) too and this works quite fast as it absorbs quicker.

Social Services-Please contact them or get someone too on your behalf. CAB would do this for you or your GP could. You are entitled to more help and dont let them tell you otherwise! Go to your MP if you dont get the help/advice you need.

You could try the PALS team at your local hospital and they would contact and advise all people they think could help you directly. This is how I got my initial help and through my GP. I now have Direct Payments and sort my own care. My OT who was sent out to assess me also had a stairlift installed, a walk in shower fitted, pillow lift, wheelchair, new step to get in my house as I couldnt get in and out witout my OH lifting me:eek: and numerous aids. I am very lucky but my GP was always behind me and my husband very supportive. It has taken 2 years to get to this stage but hopefully I am sorted now. If I need more help then I have to contact my SW or OT and they can increase. I will only take what I need though as I am not a greedy person.

If you need any help, please PM me.

    Things will get better.

It was a very gradual process. Prices stopped increasing everytime you went to the shops and interest rates came down slowly. I think that recession was the end of huge wage rises and holding the country to ransom.
