The difference is she is not at Uni and therefore does not get a student loan or Maintenance Allowance so her situation is not the same as a University student. When Uni Students work it is as a top up to the finances already in place.0 -

I am 18, a full time student and I work BOTH saturday and sunday and have done since I was 16. I dont know many students who dont work.
You are quite right, most students work. The difference is you are 18 and your parents will still be in receipt of benefits for you and I doubt you are making a substantial contribution to the household, so your situation is not the same. Thanks anyway0 -
Hey

I have already posted in this thread but feel I should reply again as this seems the same as my situation.
I'm 20 In August, And starting a 2 year college course in September - BTEC In Health and Social Care. ( I just took it for granted I would be able to get the £30 a week adult learning grant). My mum is disabled and my dad is her full time carer, When i was working I paid them £30 a week, now I'm not won't be working full time I have said I'll pay them £15 a week. Me and My parents looked for any benifits or anything that we both could get to help us out, It seems silly, 20 is still a young age, and though some 20 year old's Are working, living an adult left, it's still only 4 years since we left school, and some of us have not grown up yet and still need our parents, and they still need to care for us, including £££ way! but when your 18, thats it. Sucks a little! but i guess there has to be a cut off!.
I am currently looking for P/T Work on a saturday and sunday, I have just had too face it that I'll be at college Mon - Fri, and work Sat - Sun .. Plus I'm doing another course on a tuesday night .. but It all be worth it when I get a good job at the end of my studying!
You say your daughter is only at college 3 days a week, so thats 4 days she'l have off .. I think its pretty obv now she will have to try and find work ... Even if it's for 2 days a week? she will still have 2 days off .. And i would advise looking now!! it may take a while to find a job, so start looking now ..
I know it would be perfect to be paid a good wage for studying, we are not on the streets drinking beer and stabbing people .. but yano .. thats life

Not all uni students work to 'top up' what they receive from the government. There are plenty who are working to live. If I was to move out of home my loan would cover the rent and that's about it, to be able to pay bills, eat, and have a life I would need to work.
Being in college three days a week means she can work at least two days a week, or get an evening job in a local cinema or theatre.0 -
So how much in benefits will you lose?Okay. My daughter will be 20 in October. We currently get Child Benefit and Family Tax Credit and I get an addition to my incapacity benefit. So it is a big monetary loss.
She used to get 30 pounds on Ema. While we are not charging her rent we are having to ask for a contribution as much as we'd like to waive it, we can't.
How much child benefit have you been getting? Do you receive this for any other children?
How much Family Tax Credit have you been getting? What will this go down to from now on?
How much incapacity benefit will you lose?
I agree that she should be making a contribution to the household as it is costing you to have her there.
The contribution she should make should cover the benefits that you will be losing.
So she will need to earn this much plus an extra £30 to replace her EMA.
Have you worked out how much your benefits will go down by?
If you know that then you can work out how many hours she needs to work and whether that's possible in the time available.
If it's not possible (having worked it out) then you need to speak to the hardship people at the college.0 -
Okay. My daughter will be 20 in October. We currently get Child Benefit and Family Tax Credit and I get an addition to my incapacity benefit. So it is a big monetary loss. I am unable to work. She has 3 A levels so is not eligible for the LSF. She is doing a BTEC National Diploma in Performing Arts. The Adult Learning Grant is for Vocational Courses as I have enquired.
She used to get 30 pounds on Ema. While we are not charging her rent we are having to ask for a contribution as much as we'd like to waive it, we can't. She helps a lot at home because of my disability and is not as carefree as some students. While I understand perfectly the idea of students working and am all in favour of working for a living, if I can ease the load for her somewhat I will and hence my original enquiry.
So if anyone does know of anything that might be available please let me know. Getting a job is not as easy as it used to be. She's not fussy about what she does.
The Adult Learning Grant is NOT only for vocational qualifications. Your daughter isn't eligible for it because she already has a level 3 qualification and therefore can't get it for another. Logically she should have moved up a level after doing A levels and started a degree or HND in Performing Arts. This is why she's having financial problems now, because she's made the wrong choice of course level, although there's not much she can do about it now. Unfortunately there aren't funds available for people to repeat a level they've already covered as they're expected to progress.0 -
Thanks Titch but she does have level 2 qualifications.
It only says (or the way IO read) that epople with a level 2 are a priority, which means that people who already have a level 3 can still get it.Being in college three days a week means she can work at least two days a week, or get an evening job in a local cinema or theatre.
This is exactly what someone else told me.0 -

I am 19 next week and my child benefits have stoped. No, I don't make substantial contributions to my parents household, however I am getting my own place hopefull within the next year.
The reason I can afford to do this (and Im buying not renting) is because I have worked hard whilst studying.
I dont know about your personal finacial issues, but you said was concerned about your daughter's course suffering if she were to work and I advise that she does get a part time job, even if it is for just one day. Her course wont suffer and even if she was finding it difficult to cope with both education and work she could always quit.
Your daughter will feel alot more indipendant if she has a small income and it will be great experiance for when she has left school/college.0 -
