if I hit a snag my first instinct is to politely contact the other side which cuts out so much trouble...

This is the bit so many folk don't seem to get. If you communicate with buyers or sellers then 99% of problems can be sorted out in most cases quite amicably but sometimes one side has to give a bit.

What annoys me about some of the posts on here are obviously written by people who have not even attempted to contact the other party.

Others are written by folk who don't do a quick search for similar problems (excusable for newbies perhaps but some are pretty experienced) either on here or via ebay/paypal help pages etc.

Some are occasionally written by trolls who are just out for an argument.

To try and keep things on topic.

I don't sell on Ebay anymore but via other online routes (Amazon) but as a seller my personal code of conduct is:-

Give an accurate description (don't try and hide any flaws)

Note all serial numbers if appropriate

Send within 24 hours (if not possible inform buyer)

Send email thanking for purchase and when to expect delivery

Enclose a packing slip thanking buyer again and giving them contact details in event of a problem.

Refund for any reason within the 8 days (assuming returned in the same state item was posted). I will pay all refund P+P charges and refund original postage if I am at fault.

Refund or replace within the first 30 days or so if item faulty.

Arrange either for buyer to send to manufacturer or return to me for any warranty claim depends on what is easiest and cheapest for buyer.

Try and be helpful and as pleasant as possible.

Put my hands up and admit responsibility when I !!!! up which happens now and again.

Selling is not rocket science it is just all about good communication. It is amazing how being pleasnt and nice can turn some potentially ugly situations around. Recently posted a batch of items that had the wrong charger included in the box, I had a lot of grovelling to do but I think I kept all buyers onside by prompt (an no cost to them) action and replacement. Cost me a fortune in return postage and resending the correct charger but I think I have escaped any bad feedback

Keep your wits about you if you think you have a dishonest buyer which are very few and far between and in 4 years of trading can probably be counted on one hand. You do get the odd buyer who may not be dishonest but is just downright mean and no matter what you do you will get a neg but again they are few and far between.

Last motto never sell "Mobile Phones" I have only ever sold two and both were horror stories. Some items just seem to attract the dishonest/nutter brigade.

I think it depends on the forum you're most comfortable in - I feel the same way about some of the pure money forums, and to a lesser extent, the techie board.

I think every forum has some blunt-talking regulars, and if you're not a regular yourself, you don't know whether they're being malicious, or just straight to the point, and you can easily feel like you made a mistake straying from your comfort zone.

Posters tend to assume that you if you have a high post count, you shouldn't be asking basic questions, forgetting that you probably built up those posts NOT asking about pensions, or ISAs!

Actually as one specific repulsive rant directed at me by armitageshanks appears to have been removed it's a bit difficult to then be able to show examples.
Interesting too that although it's now been shown that a hacker has used hotmail to access and change ebay passwords to a considerable amount of people than just me armitageshanks is not mature enough to admit how very wrong all his jeering posts were on the subject.
Got to make allowances for extreme youth though I suppose. :rotfl:

According to the banner at the top of the page this site is about "Consumer Revenge", so why is that this forum consists of numerous embittered and abusive traders that seem to take any opportunity to attack people that have had a poor experience buying on ebay, defending whichever third-rate dubious seller is on the other end of the transaction?

I'm not sure if the bitter sellers have somewhere else they can go to abuse people, but it shouldn't be here.

the sellers on ebay are also consumers of ebay, that is why everyone gets involved in this forum.

lol i had a girl in ranting at me yesterday
came im full of bluster and attitude
then told me she didnt like my attitude
the irony was lost on her ;)

Let me guess. Did it start off with: "I'm not being funny, like, but..." and ended up with "Remember, I told you so"

Be afraid, be very afraid :D

Can I just reiterate what Soolin has already said:

It isn't possible to read everything single post made on this forum and sometimes abusive/inappropriate posts aren't spotting by Board Guides or paid admin.

The abuse system works on a reporting basis - if you feel that any post on here is abusive, inappropriate or against forum rules in any way, the onus is on each and every forum user to report the post to !!!!!!

Only by reporting posts can they be guaranteed to be seen by one of the paid admin. Please don't assume that any post has been seen and 'approved.'

Also bear in mind that differences in opinion are inevitable in a forum of this size, but that Martin's advice on forum etiquette should be born in mind when posting:

Pls be nice to all MoneySavers. There's no such thing as a stupid question, and even if you disagree courtesy helps.

Are the buyers consumers of Ebay as they don't pay for anything from Ebay.

I think it's worth rmembering that many people on here use ebay to buya nd sell - and Martin himself has written guides on how to save money when buying on ebay and make the most when selling on ebay. Maybe some of the "abusive sellers" are people trying to make a bit of cash from ebay, and are getting fed up with all of the rule changes.

i think it is ebay that has created this tension between buyers and sellers and many buyers are getting very whingey and some are getting threatening. I dont sell much myself anymore but i have noticed that buyers are becoming a bit more "you cant neg me so i can do what i want" with their attitude,

And reading a lot of the threads on here for the first time, i see lots of people coming here asking "i'm not happy with so what do i do" when they should be asking their seller first. i'm also seeing lots of advise to "raise a dispute", before anybody has even started talking to their sellers.
• In life you have to take the rough with the smooth there are some on here who might think because they have been thanked quite alot and have their super little stars. they know more.. :D YOU DON'T i have seen a few times mse-er ganging up on posters, how big and brave of them and they are not newbies but have 4 little stars BLESS.. The only time to gang up on anyone is the spammers that are flooding treads with cr=p..

THANK YOU :p

are people on here just as obsessed with the pointless stars and thanks ratings as they are on ebay with feedback then?

I also had a look around some fo the other the forums on here and it looks like every post is thanked multiple times as a matter of course - old school moneysavinga nd competitions in particular - regardless of wht is said in the post. Is that like a shilling circle on ebay? artificially bumping peoples ratings?

It seems you only have to post a "lol" on some boards to get 20 thanks ratings!

sating that though, i have seen some very bad advice being given out here, and also some peiople thinking they know the right answer, when they are not right at all - i saw a post about sellers not being repsonsible for items lost in the post and somebody swore blind that they werent!! I've also seen a lot of powerseller bashing on here as wll which reminds me of the Q&A threads on ebay were everyone hates powersellers.
