  • Daily Mail set to end giveaways
LONDON - The Daily Mail plans to stop giving away DVDs and CDs to lure in readers in a major shift of strategy for the mid-market newspaper.

''The Associated Newspapers-owned title has frequently given away covermounts since 2003 and last year was giving away around one a month in an effort increase circulation.
Previous covermounts, including BBC and ITV classic dramas, are thought to have added more than 100,000 copy sales a day.
But it is thought senior executives at the newspaper believe the use of covermounts is a costly exercise, prompting a significant spike in circulation, but not luring in long-term readers.
The paper will not, however, move away from offering readers other promotional offers, such as special offers with supermarkets. It has previously teamed up with Waitrose. The Daily Mail declined to comment.
The Mail on Sunday, however, will continue to use covermounts. Last year, the MoS sold an extra 600,000 copies thanks to its promotional giveaway of Prince's new album.''

March 8th: 'Cabaret' & 'The Fourth Protocol'.

ALL of these 4 titles have been newspaper freebies in the past.
The MAIL has given away 'THE IPCRESS FILE'
(The Ipcress File & Brief Encounter), 'THE FOURTH PROTOCOL' (The Eagle Has Landed & The Fourth Protocol) and 'A ROOM WITH A VIEW' only a few months ago in their British Classics Costume Drama Collection.
'CABARET' was with both The MAIL and The MIRROR.
Considering that last month's offering was Another Country & ON GOLDEN POND (previously out twice!), and To Die For & The EAGLE HAS LANDED, it's a bit disappointing, and following after the news of The Mail.

A note to The TELEGRAPH: MUST TRY HARDER!
