Advice with moving to Derbyshire????
Options
HI
We are looking to relocate to somewhere in the Derbyshire area. Can anyone recommend any areas which are nice to live in and have decent schools. Also areas which have a decent amount of activities available to children. Preferably in a small town or village location.
We are looking in this area as it is the closest point to the south (where we currenlty live) that we could afford to live in.
Any suggestions would be really appreciated.
Many thanks
JO

Wouldn't it be best to wait and see where you/your partner get a job and then move there? An area could have all you ask for but be terrible for employment and then you'd be stuck.0

Ilkeston is lovely.0

Yes we are also looking for jobs, but without knowing which areas it is best to look near to live in then it is is like looking for a needle in a haystack, so all I am asking for is ideas of where best to be based!
Also where we currently live there are jobs but very expensive to live here, the area is fairly awful and the schools are terrible.

Derby itself has a lot of big employers: Toyota, Rolls Royce, various rail-related companies such as Atkins, Bombardier, Balfour Beatty etc...so would be a particularly good bet if you or your OH have light engineering skills or experience.
It's hard to say where would be good to live unless you have an idea which towns are likely to have suitable work for you. Like everywhere, house prices vary hugely depending on specific location: A small semi in, say, Duffield (lovely village with one of the best state schools in Midlands) would cost as much as a large detatched house just a few miles away in a much less desireable area. If you wanted your children to go to a particular school you really have to live in the catchment area up here as the best schools are oversubscribed.0 -
I have been to Derby which seems lovely. My OH has family in Heanor (not too far from the centre of Derby) which I fell in love with.x0

I live in South Normanton which is just off Junction 28 of the M1. Its not a bad area, Broadmeadows is a lovely estate. Its within commuting distance of Mansfield, Chesterfield, Nottingham and of course Derby. Gives you plenty of places to look for jobs.
The local schools do very well too.0 -
I'm from Chesterfield in North East Derbyshire. I've lived elsewhere and always come back. I live in a lovely semi-rural village 15 minutes from Chesterfield town centre and 5 minutes from the edge of the peak district. Junction 29 / 30 of the M1 is approx 15 mins away. Sheffield is approx 30 mins away (Meadowhall shopping centre etc)
Chesterfield town centre has everything you need. For kids there's a cinema, bowling, activity centres etc. Matlock is 20 mins away with the cable cars and Gulliver's Theme park for the little ones. Alton towers is only about 45 mins away.
In North East Derbyshire you will find some lovely places to live, old mining communities which have reasonable house prices, although there are a few to avoid. Some up and coming area's are around. They have just opened a new Junction on the M1 (29A) at markham vale which they say should provide thousands of jobs.
I've also lived closer to Derby in Belper, but found that quite boring (sorry anyone from belper!) But I agree with the Op above about Duffield. However I would have needed a lottery win to live there!
As far as schools go, there aren't any really dreadful ones, I turned out ok! But in specific area's there are some that are 'better'
What sort of budget are you working with? Renting or buying?
As far as jobs go, I know people who live in Chesterfield who work in Sheffield, Mansfield, Nottingham, Derby and myself have been known to commute, even though I don't drive, and it's never been too much of an issue. I've changed jobs a few times, and never been unemployed. Really depends what it is your looking at jobs wise.
Basically I reccommend Chesterfield and surrounding area's. But I am a bit bias!Money, money, money, must be funny....in a rich mans world.

Nooooooooooooooooooo
It's not.
Shardlow is though - canal/2 rivers/8 pubs/the most stylish Indian restaurant in the East Midlands [according to them!!! - but seriously it's really good]/close to M1 - A50 to cross country - and as south Derbyshire as you can get - Leicestershire is about half a mile away. Primary school, but on bus route to Derby for Big School/bus to East Mids Airport for holidays/Close to Castle Donnington for Download/Motor Racing/British GrandPrix [you wouldn't know it though - no actual traffic problems]...honestly it's fab!!!0 -
