I'm about to change my broadband provider and have seen what looks like a good deal on AOL for broadband + phone. 1 month contracts, free wireless router, 8mb speed and anytime phone calls to landlines, all for £12.99 . has anyone tried it? it doesnt say what the download capacity is?

Hmmm, depends if you are worried about customer service. I have spent 30 mins at a time to aol (India and was 4p per min!!) for various reasons. I left them a few months back and they are now chasing me for money! They deny any knowledge of me ending the contract. The helpdesk isn't great either - I had trouble setting up the broadband initially and after waiting over half an hour to speak to someone, I just got passed around and still struggled to understand their english. I know I'm just one person and I'm sure not everyone has had a bad experience but when things go wrong with AOL they really do go wrong!!
Hope this helps you to make a decision.

AOL have got some good offers available at the moment, but do keep in mind the comments of shelzy123, they are about right.
Having said that, I'm with AOL and have been pondering staying or leaving them, my connection wasn't that good, but ever since they changed me over to LLU (upto 8mb) my connection has been far more stable than it ever was before the change, and considerably faster, I would say that if you can get AOL via LLU on your exchange then it is worth considering.0 -
I've been with Aol for 8 years and pay a bargain £9.99 a month. However, it is not really a bargain - since they merged with talk talk I have had nothing but problems. I keep getting disconnected - like every 5 mins. It is obviously a problem with them, seeing as I have had my BT line checked, reinstalled the modem, and changed the cables etc etc. I spend ages on the phone to tech support (who often cut me off) and get no-where. I am seriously trying to get out of my contract, but every time I complain, they put the phone down on me.
Personally, I would give AOL a miss - but then probably alot of the companies are as bad as each other. My friend is on Virgin and she has had real trouble with her billing.0 -
I've been with Aol for about a year and a half. I'm happy with them. I started paying £14.99 a month on a 12 month contract. After that expired I rang them up to see if they could do anything about the price and they immediately offered to lower it to £9.99 and double my connection speed. I was very happy about that.
The only problem I can think of is that I moved in November and asked them to set up the connection at the new place. Their Indian Call centre told me it would take a month. Obviously, that was no good so I thought I might as well change. As soon as I asked for my Mac code I was transferred to their retentions department which is, unsurprisingly, based in the UK. They told me that the month timescale I was given for moving was a mistake and it was going to be done in 3-5 days and 4 days later it was all sorted. So, for anyone who's having problems with the call centre there's always that option.0 -
i recently rejoined aol, and haven't had a problem with them atall. phoned customer services twice with regards to the delivery of my router and also the free laptop and they were very helpful and didn't take very long atall. in the past i've never had a problem with them very much atall.
but i'd say do some research and look at other isp's then decide which one you like best and has the best deal for you with regards to how much bandwidth you'll use, if you're a light user or a heavy user etc etc.Vegetarian's Do Not!!!! eat fish

Just like thebaroness, i have been old for years now, and have been pleased with the excellent service they provided. UNTIL the horrid CPW takeover. The connection is next to non existant, the speeds are slower than they used to be, and there servers are rubbish with upto 30% of websites not resolving properly.
Really, AOL isn't a good pick.

DONT DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!0 -
ive been with them since 1998 (  it was two tin cans and a piece of string back then
) and in all that time I can count on one hand how many "problems" I have had with them. I have recently reduced my tariff to 14.99 (its actually more expensive than if I went for the 12.99 which includes the phone but I need to stay with BT) So now it is cheaper than it has ever been and i get a free router
My experience with the indian call centre has been mostly fantastic and I think if you have aol talk in your package its free to call not 4p a minute (but check that)
My dad went with them as a first time broadband user with the laptop deal and at age 77 the indian call centre peeps have been remarkabley patient with him so full marks from me
I think if you are really techie its uncool to be with aol but as a technophobe like me no probs0
