We already have a massive Primark in Leeds City Center,3 floors high newly built where the Odeon Cinema used to be.
There seems to be a lot of money coming from cheap clothing,2 massive stores in one city. They feel confident that it will pay.

  • Walked past our Littlewoods a couple of days ago and had apologies but had to have a chuckle at the sign in the window: -

'Our last ever mid-season sale!' It conjures up visions of the comeback tours.

    Off topic alert.
Whatever you think about their clothes, stores like Matalan and Primark are actually very good news for developing nations around the world who are heavily reliant on the textile industry.*

The labour costs for producing a £5 pair of Primark jeans is pretty much the same as for an £80 pair of Diesel jeans. The price difference being made up of marketing, packaging, higher retail costs, design costs and lower volume sales mark-up.

Marketing, retail costs and mark-up and in some cases, design costs are all generated and kept within the UK and these take up far and away the bulk of retail price for designer clothes in the western world.

Of course since people tend to buy cheaper clothes in higher quantities then this has a positive economic effect on many developing countries.*

*Please note I am referring to economic benefit and not including any additional environmental impact.

I hate primark (sorry) but round here they are just like huge jumble sales with people just pushing and shoving and clothes and shoes everywhere all over the floor and no one picking them up, queues half a mile long at the till and hardly any staff to speak of and those you do find aren't very helpful. Maybe its just the ones near me, with any luck the ones near other people are much better. The clothes seem good value I have a few jumpers from there but like I said we won't go in our local ones coz you take your life in your own hands grappling with the jumblers lol.

Snap! I walked out the Newcastle branch the other afternoon for that reason.

But if you go first thing in the morning, most of the clothes are tidy and the queues are not too bad ;)
Here I go again on my own....

    Good post Wolvoman.

I very much agree. I used to work for Primark and prior to that Allders. The cost price is pretty much the same for goods, it's just that department stores etc have a HUGH mark up on goods. I remember selling a father christmas ornament for £6 and the cost price being 67p!

Another reason that stores like Primark and Matalan, (who I now work for!) can have such low prices is the quantities that they buy. They may buy a million of one particular line and so can get a very low cost price.
