Oxford is desperate for dosh, I read in my latest Oxford Today (oxymoron or what ;) ) they have just started a big appeal.

A lot of their problems would be ameliorated if they redistributed some of their money from rich colleges to poor. Some are incredibly wealthy (St Johns) and some very poor (Pembroke).

Actually, I do feel sorry for them as they have to compete globally these days, particularly with the major US Unis who seem to have sooooooo much money - but then the fees for an American degree are truly eye-watering_pale_

Until about 15-20 years ago, Oxbridge set their own formal entrance exams as well as interviews which were independent of A levels.

My mother went to Cambridge in the late 60s, and got an EE offer following the exam for entrance.

People applying to Oxbridge to do law in the mid-90s, when I was doing A levels has to do some sort of "law aptitude" test, as I remember.
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

Agreed. DH's (wealthy) college is always sending begging letters.

Most Universities do not even interview, including York which was my second choice after Oxford.

I 100% agree that GCSEs and A levels are too focussed on passing exams rather than learning.

A lot of schools coach their pupils for the oxbridge interviews.
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.
