Hi
Just changed to Virgin Media for their Phone Rental, Unlimited Calls and Basic television. The problem now is.......
The wireless modem signal is 'Excellent' and my broadband connection through phone line (ADSL) is not working at all.
Still with Tiscali though, not bad for me!! Just been using for browsing purposes because I work through the whole day.
Is the problem because I have changed my phone rental from BT to Virgin!!
I dont want to use Virgin media for my broadband purpose because of my old contract with Tiscali.
What am I supposed to do?? Can any other other providers help me??
Any solutions please.

If you now get your telephone service over Virgin's cable network and have cancelled your BT land line rental then your ADSL service will have been ceased, and disconnected.
Have you tried plugging a telephone in to the socket and checking for a dial tone?

If you have switched to CABLE Virgin Media, then you are no longer on ADSL nor using the BT network, but using the cable network.
The broadband on cable does not come through the phone-line, it comes through the same co-ax as the TV service would or does.
Cable phone also uses it's own network.
Your router is likely to be an ADSL Modem / Router. If you are on CABLE broadband, then you will need a cable router that connects to your cable modem.
Are you on cable? Does you have an incoming co-ax cable going to a cable modem? It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -

Right now I am on VIRGIN cable for Telephone Calls and line rental and the Television only.
I have not subscribed for their broadband connection because I am already on Tiscali for ADSL.
Does that mean I will not be able to use Tiscali (ADSL) through the phone line??
If so, can I use any other provider (DSL)??
Thanks in advance0 -
As Bex says as you now get your telephone from Virgin media cable you can only get your broadband from them. Its a closed system no other operators have access to it.
Your Tiscali service was via BT's or Tiscali's network, the only was of accessing it is via your old BT telephone connection, and to do that you have to pay line rental to BT or Tiscali plus your broadband subscription.
If you subscribe to Virgin broadband, you may still be able to access your Tiscali email account assuming you had one with them. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

As explained above, you cannot use Tiscali, but until you cancel with them they will still be charging you.
As long as you are outside the minimum period you can cancel with 30 days notice. (If you didn't use a MAC they have a cease charge of £40)0 -
In short, I will not be able to use any other providers other than VIRGIN for ADSL and DSL!!!
Thanks again for all your replies0 -

You can no longer get ADSL broadband as that requires a phoneline on the BT network.
The cable phone network doesn't carry ADSL.
Cable however carries cable broadband which is provided via the same co-ax that goes to the TV service.
As long as you aren't in an over-subscribed area you do get the advertised speed you pay for - unless you download too much and then they slow you down a little for a few hours and then you're back up to full speed, you can download many GB a day no problem.
Virgin Media phone service is quite expensive compared to BTs and as they aren't forced like BT to allow you to use cheap call providers, hence no access to short code providers like Call 1899 or Call 18185 to bring the cost of calling mobiles down or international - you can however for now use their long-winded access service but the costs are higher. VM rip you off for calls to international, mobiles (especially Three) and 0845, and 0870. This is why most people go to VM for the broadband (which is usually excellent) and sometimes the TV, but leave the phone with BT - cheaper and many options of cheap and free calls providers. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... Indeed!
You are now on cable and will need a cable router.
Internet via cable use CMTS ( Cable modem termination system) and Cable modems, which provide a similar function to the DSLAM and ADSL modems used in the telephone system. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Thanks again for all the replies.....
Very convinced, now that I am on a DSL line.
One last question.....
Can I try for any other providers for broadband through DSL or is that also
taken over by VIRGIN??
Any other options!!0 -
What makes you think you have a Digital Subscriber Line? That gum you like is coming back in style.0
