As previously mentioned, HomePlug/Powerline will give you great performance over the main. HomePlug AV which runs at 200Mbps will not get you 100Mbps throughput however - more likely it will be around 75Mbps.

A great piece of kit is Solwise HomePlug Turbo adaptor which runs at 85Mbps. You can pick up a brand new pair off eBay at the moment for around £40. If all you are doing is running between the router and the PC then fast throughput isn't needed as the Internet connection is running much slower. I have 85Mbps units at home and am very satisfied - as is my mother who uses the same technology (without knowing it as I installed it and it just works without fuss) who has exactly the scenario described - the BT master socket is a distance away from where the computer is used.

Just asked my husband (an independant telecoms engineer), he said that whilst it is not illegal to move a BT master socket it is best not to do so. One thing he did suggest is to replace the extension socket with another master socket as routers do run best off a master socket............

This is very bad advice from a so called telecoms engineer as only one master socket should ever be connected to a land line!

Routers run best off them as the job of the master socket is to isolate the line from anything but whatever is in the master socket. Fitting a second master socket will achieve beggar all.

Thanks PaulK, Would I be right in saying it boils down to cost then?

The master socket contains extra components that the line tester in the exchange uses when testing the line. Any extra master sockets connected to the line will interfere with the line test result. Using master sockets for extensions has no benefit and should not be done.

    Thanks espresso

The reason I ask Is because I did not want to tampa with the original master socket but wanted to use an adsl v10 socket & to do that I needed an NTE 5A to plug into. So I wired the NTE 5A With a normal male plug to plug into the original socket with a view to getting a better down load speed. Hey Presto I have increased my download speed by about 50% What do you think? Sorry if people think I have hijacked this thread but I think it is associated.

This link has interesting information on homeplugs and there ability to transfer data: http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/02/05/review_solwise_homeplug_av/

At the end of the day it comes down to what you want to transfer across the network if its just surfing the internet then the 85 mbs units cheesy recomends (actually achieve about 40mbs) then they would be fine.

Why not just try the cheap solution? just make sure to use filters on all phones and run the router off the extension, it will work fine as long as the internal wiring is good and most importantly will cost you less than £10 and at worst you have a few spare filters.

Wireless is a major pain to get working correctly depending on the layout of your home.

Relocating master socket is a bad idea unless done by BT.

Homeplugs i guess are the final solution but expense that maybe isnt required right now.

    Thanks once again everyone. :T

An interesting thread that has generated a healthy debate and I know so much more now.. As I said in post #10 I'm going to start with the cheaper option first i.e. the extension socket and only try the other options/spend more if that isn't suitable.
