I moved my master socket. Just opened it up, noted the connections, disconnected it, re routed the wire and socket, reconnected it.

Um... do you think that they log the position of each and every master socket? Do you think that the "tech" (don't make me laugh) checks any paper work, other than his work sheet when he attends to your home? Do you think that the "tech"cares where the master socket is.

I think it would be pretty easy to tell if you used non-BT grade materials. And not to mention master sockets are generally placed right where the BT wiring enters the property. And yes, I do think a BT tech would care about people messing around with BT's network; it's his job.

    It's not your master socket.

Think they mean that it belongs to BT, and you aren't supposed to move it yourself.

Exactly. It's not your property to play around with.

routers work best into the master socket. either move it upstairs or get a long cat5e cable with rj45 plugs on each end, (for your desktop).
wireless cards/dongles always loose some speed. and thats assuming you can get a half decent connection.
dongles are usually pretty dire at the best of times.

ps. if anyone is using the netgear dongle wg111. then make sure youve got the latest drivers. it can make a huge difference to the speed.
    Get some gorm.

I run mine from an extension, it gets a very good connection, I get about 5 or 6Mbps normally, near to our exchange, but I did improve it by using high quality filters. I'd much prefer to use wired than wireless, which is as good as useless in our house.

I have the two filters that came with the O2 router. How do you tell if a fllter is high quality or not? I have also read that you can change the faceplate of the master socket to one that incorporates a filter so that plug in filters aren't required everywhere. Would that make a difference and, if so, where could I source a good quality faceplate?

Just asked my husband (an independant telecoms engineer), he said that whilst it is not illegal to move a BT master socket it is best not to do so. One thing he did suggest is to replace the extension socket with another master socket as routers do run best off a master socket, but not to attach the third wire. That would mean a lot more to any telecoms engineer you could get hold of, and is a fairly simple job.

You should be able to find a telecoms engineer in your local Thompsons or whatever, do NOT use BT as you will get hung out to dry! Some jobs my husband charges £30/£40 for have been quoted upwards of £100 by BT! Master sockets are easy to come by and it is NOT only BT that have them!
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare

Its easy to move a master socket - its easier to fit an extension socket.

They can easily tell if it's been disconnected and reconnected. They can easily tell if you've extended wiring.

ADSL Nation, as I mentioned earlier. There is some great feedback about the improvements their products make in various BB/ADSL forums.
  • Just go for the 200mb homeplugs and you will be getting about 100mb+ speed across the electrical wiring in the house. Much more reliable than wireless and lower latency and gives you the following option. Will allow you to stream up to 3 hi def video streams across the network which you will really struggle to do with the wireless connection.

It will also then mean you have a network point in the living room so if you have a laptop or media centre or xbox media centre (only £20 for 2nd hand xbox) then this can be networked in (may need hub if your router only has one port) and you can run all your media direct over the homeplug network connection.

Then if you have kids who have there own laptop or computer just buy an extra homeplug and they instantly have access to the network from there rooms without any hastle of having to get additional wireless cards etc etc. Plus no chance of your neighbours piggy backing on your wireless network.
