Going to cook salmon in my steamer tonight, but wonder whether it goes straight in the basket, or do I need to put it on baking paper or foil ?

I put mine on a piece of foil in the steamer HTH !;)

  • Straight in the steamer, tried using foil but doesn't cook quite as easily. Best way of cooking fish is steaming, last night I had some salmon for my tea (cooked in the steamer) and it was delicious!

I've just found this very helpful thread... I'm going to be without a kitchen for several weeks and wonder if you all have more ideas for complete meals from my electric steamer? It's one of those 3 tier Tefal ones and the bases of the baskets can come out so I can do tall things like chickens but won't have preparation surfaces for things like pastry so no steak & kidney puds! Any ideas/ experiences gratefully received! xx

I used my steamer daily when in student halls so i didn't have to face our evil kitchen. I found it worked best for simple dishes like rice and veg mixtures. I did cook chicken in it in the same way too. I found if I wrapped the chicken in foil I could add butter/herbs/lemon to it thus flavouring it that way. I would also hard boil eggs in it if I was cooking other stuff.

Many variations on rice are possible - add turmeric, cinnamon, cardamon, coconut milk to the rice bowl in the steamer.

I don't eat fish either, but it would have worked well for steaming fish.

I like my veggies steamed, even did potatoes in it when I was in my temporary kitchen last year for several months. The only problem is that dh prefers them done in water, salted water. He feels it isn't at all the same having them steamed in plain water. I don't suppose there is anything to do about this,.,..except that as long as I am cooking, I'll choose how to do it LOL!

I bought a 3 tier steamer instore at Lloyds Chemist yesterday for £7.19 which isn't bad.

There is also a herb infusion filter in there too so that you can add fresh or dried herbs to add extra flavour to your food.

I know you can cook veg, potatoes, fish etc in the there but does anyone cook meat in theirs?

I assume you put meat in the rice tray so that you don't have the blood etc dripping on the foods below?

Can anyone give me any ideas and times of different things to cook in there please?

I have been using my breadmaker for a few weeks, the slow cooker and thought it was time to buy a steamer. Didn't want to spend too much so thought this would be a good buy at this price.

    Hi Lauren,

I steam chicken, fish, potatoes and veg but I'm not very adventurous with my hob top steamer although I've been using it more regularly lately as it has three tiers and will save on fuel costs.

There are some ideas and recipes that may help on this older thread:

I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the suggestions together.
