Hi, new member here. I booked an npower £29.99 service today. it was easy. You don't need to be with them and they wont try and hassle you too be either but Id suggest you book asap as the available dates are going quickly.
  • I'm with Eon and booked one today, the dates aren't going that fast as I was able to get an appointment next week. You do need someone to be at home between a Tuesday and Thursday and the appointment has to be booked and carried out before the end of next month though.

Will see what the engineer does but considering it's £30 and lasts between 30-60 minutes I think this is a real bargain.

This and the BG offer sounds more like an inspection/safety check than a service. Are there bits that need cleaning or changing in boilers, or is it just to check every thing's still working OK and safely?

Is performance/efficiency improved by a service?

A boiler service should involve a clean and some parts may need changing - when my parents has their npower service they changed a valve for no extra charge so assume this is included.

Servicing is pitched as a preventative measure to breakdowns, ensures that there are no gas leaks or unwanted emissions. CO awareness people!

More and more people are dying each year because they didn't put there hand in their pockets and have the boilers checked and a CO Alarm put next to it.

A £30 service and a £20 alarm could save your life - why wouldn't you do it?

Oh and it apparently can increase efficency - the chap told my parents 10% ish!

    Thanks.

I was asking because the cheap BG and npower services doesn't sound like they do cleaning, part changing etc.

"What will the engineer do during the service?

A gas pressure check to ensure there are no gas leaks
A flue test to ensure there are no unsafe emissions from your boiler
Inspect your boiler and controls to make sure they are operating safely
Visually inspect the boiler to check for corrosion and leaks"

That doesn't sound all that great/thorough to me. Is that sufficient?
  • To clarify ixwood, it is a full service. I've had the engineer out this morning (very courteous man called Tim) and was delighted, it was very thorough. Heat exchanger opened up and cleaned, adjusted the ignition, adjusted settings for optimum efficiency. Did a fuel burning test at the meter to see if it's using the gas it says it should be. All seals checked and explanation of how to use the radiator heat setting on the boiler in conjunction with room thermostat to make sure I'm not driving the boiler too hard.

He was here a good 3/4 of an hour and thoroughly explained everything he was doing. I was very impressed and all for £30, I'm going to phone and leave a compliment for him as he worked very hard.

If you call NPower on the number and ask them to read the list of what the 30 point check involves they will gladly oblige you, just as I did before the service. Definitely worth the money.

    Thanks, that's great.

    I'll book one then.
  • I booked a service 2 weeks ago for my boiler. They cancelled the evening before so I had already booked a day off work and they have now rescheduled for a date 5 weeks away. Great service!
Have they done this to anyone else?
