  • I mananged to get printer ink on my carpet the other day and all the commercial products did nothing, so I mixed surgical spirits and nail varnish remover in a spray bottle and sprayed that on it and used kitchen towels to soak up the ink. This has got most of it off.

my daughter was recently given a second hand fridge that her grand parants had, it worked perfectly well with no smell, it was turned off for about three weeks and now smells really bad, like a fishy smell, she has tried all sorts to clean it but still the smell persists. any ideas?

I had this situation and i found that one of my plugs was slowly melting and it gave of this fishy smell!! if the smell does not go you may need to get it checked just in case.
  • I was trying to clean my oven today and was only able to shift a few spills and most of the less stubborn dirt and grime. The metal racks were especially difficult to clean as they've a lot of baked on grease spots and splashes. Can anyone suggest a solution for getting rid of this kind of grime? The lower part of the cavity which is removable was easy to clean to a degree, I was able remove the less stubborn dirt but again I noticed a lot of baked on blackish grease spots. And also, what’s the best solution for getting the glass on the oven door clean?

I’ve read here that one solution to use is vinegar and bicarbonate of soda but would like someone to point me in the right direction as I’m not 100% sure.

    Thanks

Where the metal racks/shelves are concerned. Put a towel in the bottom of the bath. Run some warm water and dissolve some biological soap powder in the water - you only need a couple of inches of water. Put the metal shelves in to soak (the towel is to stop the shelf causing damage to the bottom of the bath) preferably overnight. Next morning you should find that the shelf comes clean with very little rubbing - works a treat. First saw this tip from Kim and Aggie on 'How Clean Is Your House?'.

It has to be biological soap powder - something to do with the enzymes in it that cut through the burnt on grease etc. You could also try the same thing with very dirty grill pans - should work!

Not sure about the rest of your oven - mine's quite new and I've managed to keep on top of things with it by just giving it a wipe everytime I use it - always best doen while it's still warm. My old one was very manky :o when it finally went to the cooker graveyard.
  • Good old Kim and Aggie.

Thanks Ollie! I'm not one for cleaning my oven every time I use it I'm afraid though as you say it's always best done while it's still warm. I remember reading this in the manual when I first bought the oven about 5yrs ago. I'll try the biological soap powder tip whenever I've a bit more time, maybe next week.

    Thanks again!
  • Hi all!

My 3 year old daughter helpfully got hold a permanent black marker pen (depsite it being supposedly out of reach) and drew over a section of our wooden floor in the kitchen, the skirting board and on the bottom of our white wooden kitchen door! We are renting the property so drastically need to remove the stains.

We have tried baby wipes, these have minimised the stain, but have not got rid of it.

    Has anyone any ideas!

    Thanks.

Try using toothpaste. Sounds strange I know but it really does work.

  • For all round cleaning the best is stardrops - see the stardrops thread. For pvc and grease in the kitchen I use liquid hand soap a glug of vinegar and a little bicarb great for cutting through grease and grime with very litle effort.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light
