By the way - I forgot the cost £78 - less than half the cost of my local optician

This is not advice - hopefully it's common sense..
  • I ordered some specs from https://www.goggles4u.com 2 weeks ago and according their website they are 'awaiting shipment', but have been like this for around 10 days. I e-mailed them to ask if their was a problem and was told they would be shipped 'soon'. Don't want to discourage anyone from ordering from there but thought I'd share my experience. Has anyone encountered the same thing with this company?

    Hello
I ordered my glasses two weeks ago to the day from Goggles4u and they arrived this morning. the hard box they come in is pretty cheap looking but the glasses themselves are very nice. I ordered the plastic lenses which go dark in the light and they work! Its a new prescription however, so I'm getting used to them! The only other comment is the edges of the lenses aren't as smooth as I thought they would be but this is a minor comment and once on, they look really nice.
But if ever I stray from the path I follow
Take me down to the English Channel
Throw me in where the water is shallow And then drag me on back to shore!
'Cos love is free and life is cheap As long as I've got me a place to sleep
Clothes on my back and some food to eat I can't ask for anything more

Ordered two pairs of glasses from Glassesdirect. One pair normal and one pair with polarised lenses.

Both pairs came exactly the same (i.e. no polarisation on one set). They blamed it on me ordering on the web and the fact that their new website had just gone live. Am sending them back to have the lenses changed.

    Not a great 1st purchase from Glassesdirect.co.uk

I had previously purchased from 39dollarglasses.com in the US with no problems at all (and similar leadtimes).

I ordered our family's third pair of goggles4u specs 18th October (standard free delivery) and they arrived 26th October. About the same timescale for the first two pairs ordered a month or so back.

This third pair are the nicest ones yet.

I had a similarish experience with them ages ago, so have my doubts about the new website excuse. I ordered thin lenses and paid extra for them. The glasses they sent me didn't have thin lenses, but they did go dark in sunlight (I hadn't asked for this!). When I queried, they said that it was a fault on their website. They offered to redo them, but I'd already waited about a month for the incorrect pair to come through and at the time needed them desperately as was having contact lenses problems, so decided to keep them. They did refund the extra I'd paid for the thinner lenses, but I'm not keen on the polarisation thing - they seem to go dark even when I'm indoors!

Just ordered a pair of varifocal specs from high street chain for the enormous price of £400!! feel ripped off. Too late to cancel, will get details from them though and get a second pair off the web!

Bad Luck. I know how you feel as i've just done much the same.....
Had my eye-test at optical express and ordered varifocals with the usual extra scratchproof, anti-reflection etc coatings. The test was free (pensioner) and there was a 30% reduction offer as well. Then they said I could have a second pair for free in a cheaper frame but still varifocus and with tinted and coated lens, so it sounded great.

The overall final cost was just over £240 which seemed a bit steep but by then I was hooked and paid a deposit.

At the end of the day, I suppose getting two pairs (I always seem to misplace one or damage them) at that price is reasonable but now I've read all these posts, I'm not so sure.

I'm due to get my new ones next week so will at least get them fitted and tested properly but is it all worth it? I don't know.

    Anybody care to comment?
Life in the old dog yet? :hello:
(I used to look like this, but it was a long time ago!)
  • have a look at https://www.glassesuk.com who also do varifocals with the frames works out at a good bargain price they also take nhs vouchers which they refund when you send your proof of voucher to them.

    dodo,
I picked my new specs up yesterday from my local D&A the girl did'nt do any adjusting or even checking the ear things, I felt as if I was being rushed out of the shop both yesterday and 2 weeks ago when I had my eye test, also felt intimidaded into buying when I was told the price of £395 for one pair if varifocals with no extras! anyway too late now but I asked for the piece of paper that they send off with your order (measurements and things) I had picked it up off the table before she could say no, so I am all set for ordering on line when I have saved up.

Nobody seems to have mentioned eyecare vouchers.

If you do a lot of VDU work, your company may have a scheme to recompense yu for eye tests and give vouchers if you need glasses for VDU work.

My company for example will give a voucher for an eye test, (in my case not needed as I am diabetic and entitled to free tests anyway).

My optician ( D&A have the best opticians of the high street chains, in my opinion) then filled out a form stating that I needed glasses for VDU work.

I gave this my HR , and got a voucher for £55. Having looked at glasses in the shops, I relaised I would not get much change out of £200.

But looking on the net, I was astounded that I could get a pair from £15 !

But few of these internet companies accept vouchers. I list the ones that do here, but if you know of any others, post it here:
