How can you buy varifocals on line? Each time I have ought them I have had to have little black dots marked on the lens of the frame I was buying so that the lens could be made to suit my needs. That cannot be done on-line can it.

The dots are there to show the distance between pupils. This information has to be supplied to the spectacles manufacturer so that the lenses are correctly aligned.

I got my glasses at Costco earlier in the year - saved a small fortune on what I paid at Boots last year (even with BOGOF). I have really bad eyesight and at Boots the lenses cost £117.50 each!! The complete pair of glasses and the eyetest was £190 at Costco. It's cheap, and you can have the fit adjusted by someone when you collect them and all that stuff you might miss out on by going online. I'll be going back there next time!

  • spexmaniac does free thin lenses
  • I recently bought some glasses from https://www.selectspecs.com It has a big range of cheap frames that start from £13 plus they also have a gigantic range of designer frames.

They were the only site that offered Free thin lenses, Anti Reflection, UV protection, Scratch resistant lenses, Anti smudge treatment. It is amazing how many of the other sites try to hide these treatments which https://www.selectspecs.com offer free.

I phoned them as have I have a difficult Prescription and an optician talked me through the Prescription. I first wanted to test them out with a cheap frame, which cost £14.95 including Prescription lenses. I have since bought a set of Police glasses that were £210 cheaper than the High Street.

The savings are incredible. I have yet to try them but I know the young man who set up this business and he deserves every opportunity to succeed in this new venture.
  • if you're a student you can get 25% of at Spec Savers with an NUS card. You could easily save at least £25 with that, which might even cover one of our extorsionately priced course books!
  • I have just saved myself over £100 and got the perfect pair of specs! Here's how:

I saw a pair of designer glasses in Specsavers which I really liked but they were £125 before extras were added on (i.e high index lenses and scratch resistant coating).

So I noted down the model number and managed to find the exact pair on ebay for £35 new. If they dont sell the pair you want on ebay, online optical retailers can often get in the pair you want at a fraction of the price.

Obviously these glasses did not have my prescription in them so I sent them off to specdirectuk who reglazed them for £50. This included all the necessary coatings and high index lenses.

It would have cost me over £225 to have bought these glasses with high index lenses from Spec savers so I managed to save myself loads and the finished glasses are fantastic:)

May I suggest Designer Specs. The prices are generally 50% cheaper than the likes of Specsavers etc.

I wouldn't trust specs bought online. I want somewhere I can go to in person that can measure me up for the frames and lenses, and where I can return to when they're wrong - which they invariably are at the first attempt. Whether it's adjustments or actual faulty manufacture, there's always something wrong with the first pass.

Spectacles are a very personal thing, especially when your prescription is not simple and you want various coatings applied. Also, I usually put contact lenses in and then go shopping for frames, so I can see myself wearing them in the mirror. How can I do that on the Internet?
