Free Broadband with Talk Talk

Options
Hi everyone, not sure if this is the right place to put this thread, we joined with thousands 2 years ago on the assumption that we would receive free broadband, how wrong we were!! We have emailed on several occasions to find out when we will get free broadband only to be told "It is not coming to your area." When we asked why all we get is "The country is very large and we might get to you some time."
We now feel that we have been duped into this as we know some people have already got free broadband, was this just a very big ploy by talk talk to get new customers? Does anyone have any ideas on where we go next or should we get in touch with trading standards?
We have been paying £10 every month for broadband with speeds ranging from 3.4mbps to 6.1mbps, we were also told we should receive speeds 8mbps, we never have! Also our house is right opposite a telephone exchange, and talktalk say that the sppeds vary because of the distnce from the exchange, when they realise we are right opposite they go very quiet.
Would appreciate any help from anyone on this.

I had a call from talk talk and like the sound of the phone bill as I have and kept the 1 hour free, although it's 70 minutes with talk talk.
Any way I was told when I joined I would get free broadband and so when I tried to get it I couldnt. The reason being is we are to far from the exchange and we have been told that before.
I dont think it is fair to everyone as I cant get it and yet others can, why should I be different.

Because perhaps the distance you are from the exchange is too far to provide any where near an acceptable service?

Why can they advertise then that if you take up their offer of telephone package they will give you Free Broadband?. As for the exchange, it is right at the bottom of our garden!

Speeds are affected by contention ratio as much as distance from the exchange. Even those on cable can't escape the effects of contention even though they're not affected by exchange distance.

I am also very annoyed about talktalk I was also told I would get free broadband in a couple of months of joining its been many months of paying £10 a month, I don't live in a little rural village but only 2 miles from a county town that gets free broadband my local exchange isn't far from me either. I also only get 1.9mb of speed a friend of mine who just joined o2 and lives in the next road gets 11mb of speed.
I like talktalk for the International inclusive calls so want to stay with them. I also tried to e mail the owner but got e mailed back by customer relations I got 4 e mails from them every time by a different person. All they told me was it wasn't free yet from my local exchange NO REALLY??? I see they are again advertising free broadband again on TV
I wish Martin could get on the case for us.

Unfortunately you get what you pay for when it comes to broadband. I have to wince everytime I see Martin recommend a cheap/free broadband provider (including TalkTalk). I have been round them all, and they have all been awful, with slow speeds, download limits on "unlimited download" packages, and possibly the worst customer service since the invention of the telephone.

    Caveat emptor I'm afraid.

Well, It could be relating to the noise margin or the SNR, most modems will give you this informaiton in the diaganostics page.
Did you ever get better speeds with another ISP?

unfortuantley this "upto" bussiness that most ISP's are getting complaints from ofcom are yet to be resolved, No Isp can garentee you will get a set speed all the time unless you pay through the nose for a bussiness package or a lower contention ratio.

I am posting this on a rare window when I've actually managed to get on-line with TalkTalk's broadband service in the evening. For the first month after signing up with TalkTalk we were disconnected only infrequently and always managed to re-connect without difficulty. Now that the period during which we could cancel the order has passed, we find that we're disconnected every evening and we find it almost impossible to reconnect. Even when we DO manage to reconnect, we're disconnected again after a few minutes (in fact, I was disconnected while I was logging on to this forum and I'm now disconnected AGAIN - I'll now have to reconnect before submitting the reply:mad:  !). During the day the problem isn't so bad. We assume that the traffic in the evenings is more than TalkTalk can deal with - is anyone else having this problem?

I've been with Talk Talk since 25th June - but - so far - without incident. I wonder, if it really is to do with location. I'm in Ayrshire, and altho' it's early days, I'm happy with TT's service. Friends living locally have also reported no probs with TT.

I checked my exchange before signing up, and TT was one of the few I could get - saving me so much money that it was worth a go. I've not yet been disconnected once - altho' I keep thinking it's too good to be true!

Any of your friends living wherever you are with Talk Talk? They have similar problems to you?

I would think that if you're regularly being disconnected, then there is a fault somewhere. Congestion on the TT network will give you slow speeds, but for repeat disconnections I would eliminate your internal wiring ( plug your router into the master socket) as a problem first, then if you still have problems, raise a fault with TT. If you have a very long telephoneline , it could be that the lines just not good enough to maintain a connection at night when there is more interference around.
