I too *love* Angel Delight. I think it does us all good now and then to be a big kid!
My kid sister has just posted me a few packets of Asda Smart Price's imitation Angel Delight and it tastes pretty good!
Anyway - this one also contains hydrogenated vegetable oil (as do a lot of other things in my cupboard) so I guess it should be eaten in moderation as said before.
As far as making your own goes, I guess if you had your own science laboratory and chemical plant, you might manage it, otherwise you can make your own light moose by whisking up egg whites with castor sugar to make a kind of soft mirangue mix and slowly fold in delicious things like... strawberry / chocolate syrup or I guess some artificial flavouring if that's your thing.. Or.. if you're lucky enough to have an Aromatherapist friend, ask him/her about using essential oils to flavour food. An old friend of mine from the UK used to make delicious lavender moose.. YUMM! Make sure you know what you're doing if you're using essential oils in food - many are toxic. And if you're going to try whisking egg whites, make sure the eggs are fresh, the bowl and beaters are squeaky clean and free from any oil (otherwise they simply won't whip), and remember raw eggs should not be eaten by the very young, very old or the infirm.
You could also use whipping cream or double cream as the base for a moose but it will result in something much more rich and much more heavy than Angel Delight. Maybe whip up some cream seperatly and then fold it into the whipped, flavoured egg whites - I think that would probably be rather delicious!0 -
My mouth is watering at the thought of Angel Delight. I'm definately going to have to get a chocolate or butterscotch one to make up for tonight. Lovely Jubly!
If anyone figures out how to make a good HM version though I'd prefer that! Will defintely try Yategirls cream and jelly method. Any ideas how to get some chocolate blended into it?SIMPLE SIMON - Met a pie man going to the fair. Said Simple Simon to the pie man, "What have you got there?" Homemade angel delight:
3 1/2 tbsp cornflour
3 tbsp sugar
1 pint milk
4 tbsp cocoa
mix dry ingredients together in a saucepan. add in the milk and set over med heat, stirring constantly. once thick, let cool and fold in 1/2 pint whip cream, lightly whipped. Can remove the cocoa + change the sugar to brown for butterscotch, or add vanilla for vanilla flavour. Or not put in the whip cream for a more healthy version. It's also very nice swirled into tapicoa pudding or cold rice pudding.0 -
You can also make an interesting dessert adding evaporated milk to jelly (half water again) but it don't taste like Angel Delight!!! Can we get any clues from the packet ingredients??? Shirley Goode used to be the woman for all the make your own stuff but is she still around?

My 13 year old has a passion for angel delight - which I refuse to buy as I don't like the ingredient list. He has requested that I ask on here if anyone has a recipe for a make it at home substitute.....so over to you ladies and gentlemen.

I've found alternatives for a lot of things (various dairy/other allergies that severely compromise the menu planning) but I'm feeling baffled by this one.
You can whip really cold skim milk with a bamix using the aerator attachment (the flat one) - perhaps you could flavour that with a bit of squash first?Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan
