  • Anyone know how much a side of beef weighs??????????????:confused:

Have been rather silly and ordered one it will be here in a month (it was walking around a field an hour ago):D

The lady described it in joint terms rather than weight it sounded like a lot of meat for £80

They have half pigs for the same price including all the offal trotters and head - I passed :embarasse but ordered a £30 pork pack instead need to find a sausage machine cheap quick!!!

They also had a farm shop(tumbledown shed selling veg it was fab all laid out like an old fashioned grocers got
red gooseberries, a huge cauli ,a bunch of carrots ,spring onions and beetroot plus 1/2 dozen eggs for less than £3:T :T

Its amazing what you find on the way to pick up freecycle stuff:A

I hope you've got a big freezer! I used to buy either a hind quarter or fore quarter of beef - never both at the same time - and I had a chest freezer at the time.

Anyway, I hope it turns out OK; keep us posted.

I have a chest freezer and a big tall freezer too i figure this will last us a year we dont eat meat every day

My biggest concern is freezing it in the right portion sizes don't want to defrost more than we need

Anyone know if cream can be frozen and refrozen i froze some last week and now i have seen a scrummy ice cream recipe using cream and lemon curd and a couple of passion fruits

shaz, you're well stocked now lass eh?

I think it's only meat that's a problem with double freezing.... Cream should be ok.:D

exciting times having all that lovely meat in...:T:T:T

mama67 your recipe book sounds great, very frugal! Look forward to any recipes you'd like to share!

Have just made the gnocchi, bit fiddly, but a good value meal I think, 4 large portions for 17.6p, so just the sauce to allow for...

    A pesto-y sauce will make the meal 19p a person, a tomato-ey one will be 14p a person :money:

ISOM/BOB?, if I make a batch of gnocchi with wholemeal flour and potato and a tomatoey sauce without oil, would that be a SW friendly dinner for ISOM?

Also, BOB, thinking of how your family are meat fans, have you spotted the deal on at Morrisons this weekend? 4 chicken portions for 50p! 2 peppered steaks for 50p! I know where I'm gonna be early on saturday morning! Sorry to our veggie friends....

    Love Weezl x

I've got my grans copy of this and it is fab! How old is yours? Mine is from the late 40's, so there is lots of 'first take your powdered egg' and every salad seems to have alternate heaps of beetroot and potato salad around the edges :D

i have 60s edition, but it says it is the same as the 1935 1st edition, with recent recipes added in too.

i havent actually made anything from it yet, i just like reading it!

i love it, recipe titles like 'to cook an old duck', 'grapes in a pie' and 'savoury sheeps head' (as opposed to what?? sheeps head triffle?)

Ooh would be interested to see your gnocchi recipe/ technique Weezl, I tried them years ago and they fell apart in the water when I cooked them, leaving me with a pot of something resembling lumpy wallpaper paste :o

erm, think it's just morrissons Shaz, have you got one near you?;)

I found a gnocchi recipe here, and doctored it!

    My gnocchi version-
half a packet asda smart price instant mashed potato (you can't taste the difference in this honest!) 8p

    400g plain flour 9.6 p

make up mash according to packet instructions, I made mine a little wetter than normal, and added ground black pepper.

add flour and mix then knead until a fairly stiff dough. Somewhere between bread and pastry...Leave to rest for 30 mins then roll out into long sausages, about 1.5 cm fat, then cut into 2cm chunks.

Cook gnocchi in boiling water til they rise to the surface of boiling water, approx 2 mins.

    Makes 4 generous :D portions.
