redsquirrel! A meal without spinach! you'll be getting cravings!:D

Spaghetti-wise, how much do you normally cook for a lunch-time portion? Mr Weezl has 150g per evening meal portion, which is 7p for the pasta. Wonder if I can get away with half as a lunch?

penny penguin :rotfl: adopts breathy voice:

    this is not just pigeon,..........

this is Penny penguin's pan-fried, home-caught pigeon breast, with fresh, crisp salad leaves, and crisp, nutty homemade bread......

yep, not having to work such long hours in a city far away from home would be a dream come true!;) Lovin' the sound of your plan, I think I thought you already had a small holding?!

softstuff, plum pie, germish, Carrie B, Cw18.... let's start a new wave! TV progs, magazines (available free online!) celebrity features, all pushing the way of the frugalista! Not a face lift or a drizzle of '£25 a bottle truffle oil' in sight! (unless they found the truffle themself, with a pig they then ate the behind off!)

    c'mon! Let's do it!

Ahem :o . Calm down Weezl.

Bob, good tip on the pile of toast! DH will thank you for that suggestion! He is a fan of the evening snack!

Plum pie I'll amend our index to include your new improved lemon buns! ;)

hello and welcome Loocyloo! :D :j Look forward to hearing more about your quest!

moneydribbler, great example of freeganism :T :T :T Looking forward to your inventory;)

Best do a bit more work now!

    Love Weezl x

not sorry i asked but think i wasn't as eloquent as i hoped! completely understand your tv cooks logic, the crab dish was a rare time when my husband really fancied something it's not usual! our preference is for HFW style kill it cook it eat it and homebrew, or when Jamie was dealing with gluts of things in the garden-actually useful. I did watch Delias new show but ranted the whole way through about how expensive and generally -ugh- it was. i love recipe books and cookery shows but then tend to close the books and go and do my own thing :D

I think (after my witter above...) my question is do you ever fancy a dish which (not inspired by tv cooks or recipe books) just doesn't fit in with your plans? like at certain times of the month (body related) i neeeeedd steak. obv i could get what i need from greens.

cw18 good point re whoopsied meat, unfortunately i'm housebound following a car crash so i can't utlilise those deals atm.:o i do buy meat in bulk online instead.

I know, no spinach, how will I cope?! :rotfl:

I think my lunchtime pasta is about 100g - recommended is 75g I think, isn't it? Doesn't seem enough though!

Pasta of any sort (which I only use for main meals), I lob 80g dried per person into the pan -- even for my 19 year-old who's in the Army. But as hubby often can't face a "full" portion, I guess he sometimes gets about 70g equiv and others get 85g-ish

Goodness this this thread is growing fast. I have a family of 6 to feed, and i have been really trying to get my budget of £60 a week down. It all goes really well, until i ask my husband to grab a loaf of bread on the way home. He always, always picks up a loaf for over a £1, and he is terrible with the toilet rolls, i always buy the value ones, but if i leave him to it, he comes home with the nice soft quilted ones!if you are flushing it down the toilet why spend the extra money??its his overdraft i am trying to get rid of!
Thankyou for the great potato bread recipe, made it in my bread machine last night, lovely toasted with the lemon and carrot marmalade on!
I made up a great batch of cooked red cabbage this morning and even had that on the top of the bread for my lunch.

my cooked red cabbbage recipe, if anyone would like to try it:
    one red cabbage, shredded
    one onion diced
2 cooking apples, peeled and diced
    3 tablespoons of malt vinegar
    2 tablespoons of sugar.
    1/4pt of water

Cook slowly in large saucepan with a lid for about 1 hour.

Really is delicious, we are going to have it with hm potato rosti burgers.

    Looking forward to tea!
It's the start of the no takeaway challenge.

made pea-pod soup for lunch - it was a resounding success! DH was home and he loved it, even though he was a bit dubious at first.

today I've been starting to think about costing my meals - just to see how they compare with what other people are doing. I'll probably do it gradually as I need to dig out supermarket receipts (or check prices online) and measure out what I use.

calculated my morning porridge to be 5p :j but the frozen raspberries I added a whopping 21p . I'm not keen on raisins in porridge so tomorrow I might try grated apple...now how much did those apples cost?
    weaving through the chaos...

Re: cravings for certain things, I think I know what you mean, although mine aren't maybe as specific! I sometimes find myself definately fancying meat for dinner, or saag paneer, or summat.:D

There's normally 15 different things to have in my freezer at a time, in 2 person portions, so it's usually a text conversation between me and Mr Weezl on the journey home, to whoever's in first: 'pls defrost liver casserole and do sprouts gravy and mash x' usually does the trick!;)

I can usually satisfy a craving with what we've got in, but if not, I think I would just buy the thing I fancied, cook with it, and then freeze the rest for next time!

Hope that answers your question a little better than before:o

    No, don't. :j

I read a great quote once

'Think like a person of action, act like a person of thought'.

Sounds like a clear endorsement of kitchen planning to me!

I already send friends recipes and nutritional crunches from this thread. That liver/tomato/pasta dish sounds great for my sister.

Just had lunch - lentil pate with extra raw courgette and carrot grated in with leftover pasta from last night. Delish.
