The broad bean 'hummous' is a spanish dish which I first had at an awesome tapas place in N London. I never remember to make it cos I dont like broad beans any other way but my sister does, often. It is very rich and has quite a firm texture, (unless you put lots of oil in it!)
  • Both of those dishes sound great. I love weetabix cake, she says eyeing up the three packs of weetabix left.mmmmmmmmmm

last night i got an urge to bake flat cake, basic sponge mix, 1 egg, mixed fruit and cherries..put it all in at 160 C, stand back and watch the stampede!

    flour 5p, marg 5p, mixed fruit. 10p, cherries 10p, sugar 8p, vanilla flavouring .5p??egg 11p.
Total cost 48.5p ish.... and it is lovely.
MAkes about 20 slices, so 2.5p per slice

Got up this morning and got my cereal (with banana and currants) ready.. only to find that the milk in the fridge had gone solid! Stuck the bowl of dry cereal and fruit in the fridge - not sure if the chopped up banana will keep but will see what it's like.

Ended up having two of the spinach pastries for breakfast! - 16p
And another one for snack - 8p
Small portion of red lentil curry & rice for lunch - 20pish?
Cereal bar this afternoon - 6p
Tea - spaghetti with spinach & ricotta sauce - about 12p
    Yoghurt lolly - 6p
    Total for day - 68p

Saw an interesting liver recipe with spinach & sultanas here - http://uktv.co.uk/food/recipe/aid/511691 - thought it could be converted to a cheaper version, maybe leaving out/ replacing the pine nuts?

Spinach, spinach, spinach.... just call me Popeye... :D

Thanks yategirl! :T:T:T:beer: Can I put other plants quite near the beans and mangetout then, without them getting choked?

Was thinking of you as I harvested the rocket, thinking, 'must tell her there's loads of wild rocket growing down by Bristol parkway station'! And on Harry Stoke lane you can harvest poppy seed heads, and also by the station, little fallen apples for chutney or bhajee.:D

Still planning whether that foraging walk is possible for us on the 22nd. We've found a place to stay the night, so it may just work!!!:D

    Love Weezl x

Now I really DO have to meet you so you can show me where all these things are!!! Mmhhh... rocket at the station..... !!

Hope you can come over for the foraging eve... I am asking DH to make note that I "have an appointment" so he can't stay at work late that night!!!!

For the beans - yes - I have my beans growing up the fence.. in front of them I have brussel sprouts (just a few plants) and in front of those.. I have my leeks!! All squidged in!! Look at http://www.squarefootgardening.com/ for an idea of how close you can plant stuff - I find this a big help when planting my garden up.

Many plants don't like manure too fresh, some don't like it at all... pumpkins and courgettes do very well on ground that has been well manured or even on compost heaps! If any of you are close to bristol and want chicken manure - let me know - I often have bags ready to go and usually freecycle it so am happy to pass it on!
  • Can anyone tell me how long the lentil pate and liver pate keep in the fridge when made.
Can it be frozen ? How long would you keep it in the freezer - sorry a bit of a novice at all this LOL
(due with baby 2 any day now and craving liver like you wouldn't believe !! LOL)

    Hello all you lovelies!

Been indexing away like mad and think/hope I've included everyone (you have to be very systematic and have about 10 windows open all at the same time! Tricky!) If you go to post number one of this thread, there is now an idex, which includes all the recipes from the last challenge and this new one.

BOB- that flat cake sounds nomnomnom, good idea! will you post a pic of results? thanks for the garden tips too...;)

yategirl, thanks I'll check that link too! All those things were just on my walk from the station to work! I've been amazed by what I've started spotting! It's as if some primal hunter-gatherer instinct has been awakened. The countryside used to be just a big blob of green to me, but now it's becoming lots of distinctly different things, and a bit like a larder! Chicken manure eh? May well take you up on that....

redsquirrel, that recipe looks great! What about sunflowerseeds in lieu of the pine nuts?

CW18, glad DH approves of the pate :D

Vampiric addiction, how's the saag, have you tasted it yet?

hi and welcome munchki:jwe definately hope you'll post some recipes:D

plum pie - oooh tapas! nomnomnomnomnom... Will definately buy some more broad beans now!;)

    Love Weezl x

I`ve spent my whole weeks budget:eek: in the last two days, but aslong as the milk holds out we will be fine.I bought the kids 4 pints of organic blue top x2 so when it gets down to about 2 pints each carton it will have to be topped up with water.

I`m so glad by cupboards are pretty well stocked or I would of no doubt failed in my first week. I need meal planning up and running.

Is it true you can get yeast for free out the bakers bit of the supermarket? I`m not sure I dare ask.

Weezl I may need your expertise on nutrition info,as my 5 year old hardly eats anything and is extremely fussy.I`ve tried working out what I think is the average amout of food a child needs a day,but to be honest i dont have a clue and try to just shovel as much grub down her as I can.

Off to my friends for a couple of free cups of tea.

thank you so much for the idea plum pie - I've just finished eating it now!

I see what you mean about it being thick - I added a bit of oil but didn't want to put too much in. I was pouring myself a glass of tomato juice to go with my lunch and decided to pour some of that in - it thinned it down and tasted ok. Maybe I'd use lemon juice next time.

weezl - fresh horse manure is soooo rich in nitrogen that it will actually burn the plants. they say it's best to leave it to rot down for 6 months, but it might be quicker as it's summer.
