I use 375g of the cheap frozen mince for three of us with an onion of 120-130g. Then I add 120g (or thereabouts) each of peas and sweetcorn to the mix. Nobody complains about there not being enough, so I'm now trying to reduce the mince fractionally, and will be trying to replace it either with soya or lentils
I can't mash swede into potatoes either..... hubby is the only person eats the [strike]disgusting[/strike] stuff
Not sure how much it is over there, but over here I always use lamb mince. It's the same price as the cheap fresh mince. Has more fat in it, which really means that by the time I've bulked it out, it still tastes just like meat, but ....mostly isn't. I split a 500g pack into 3 portions usually. From 1 portion I can get an 8 serve lasagne (bulked with grated carrots, onions, mushrooms, tomatos), 4 good serves of meatballs (I liquidise an onion, a couple of carrots, some tomato puree and an egg with a whole load of spices, then add breadcrumbs when mixing with the mince to get a good consistency) or things like chilli, pide, lahmacun etc.
500g is enough mince for approx 15-20 meals for us depending!! You only need about 100g of protein a day in any case, and that for us is as likely to come from a lentil based dish as a meat one.Softstuff- Officially better than 0070 -
hmmmm....curiosity about pate. Can you substitute chicken livers for other animals eg lamb, pig etc does anyone know?
I've tried all kinds and all are good, but ox liver needs booze and garlic to mask the flavour!:D
I've been working on the kitchen floor...
Completely off topic but if you'd like to see where I've got to...;)
When we bought our victorian house, there was laminate flooring in the kitchen, but at the edge I coul;d see hints of old tile peeking through. In a fit of over optimism I ripped it all up, thinking there may be a perfect tiled floor underneath.... Guess what? there wasn't!
Big gaps of concreted over mising tiles littered the floor. OK I exaggerate, 4 bigish bits were missing.:p
So. I've just set my hand to remedying this.:o
I filled over the concrete with a strong white filler, pic 1. Drew in the design with pencil, pic2, and have been gradually building up the colour, remaining pics.
I think I'll check the colour match in the morning when it's dry.:D
Sorry for boring you! It is very money saving though, cos we were quoted £6000 to have them replaced professionally!
I'll come back and say something about food and recipes soon I promise,
Love Mad Weezl x:D

sorry I think that's my fault for making the images too fat! I'll reduce them in the morning... Fergus has had it for the day I reckon. His message appears to be 'Mummy we shall lie down before we fall down!'

Minced lamb is horribly expensive here

 Yikes!
Here you can get minced lamb cheaper than the cheapo beef mince. A 500g pack would normally be about $6.... sooo about 2.70gbp. The same in beef is usually about $7, so about 3.30gbp. Now, the thing is, I never buy it at this time. At 6pm in my local supermarket they tend to reduce the lamb mince to $2 a pack (about 80p). That's when it works out about the same price as your cheap frozen mince I guess. They tend not to reduce the beef mince so often, but I now prefer the lamb anyways.
The best deal I had was one night when a woman was marking the packs down to 50c each (about 25p). I thought it was Xmas! I sent OH back to the front of the store to get a trolley and we got 12 packs!!!Softstuff- Officially better than 0070 -
Liking the tiles Weezl... :T ...not surprised fergus needs a nap
On the lamb subject ..it seems to be as rare as rockin horse droppings out here full stop..never mind getting my mitts on minced or better still breast of lamb (my fave)
Out here Piggy is the main meat.. which also means i have to pay more for my beasts liver (when they have it) than for pigs liver..and I only like Beasts -which is usually the cheapest:mad: .... still at least I can get loads of belly pork nomnomnom... spot the theme -guess who likes all the fatty wobbly cuts :rotfl:
The only lamb I have yet to get is the newzeland frozen stuff... but the boneless rolled shoulder is nice mind . I really would rather stick to local produce -which on the whole is much easier here than it was in the UK... but every so often the lamb calls to me
Not long for my bed now I think..another day of crafting tomorrow :j then Monaday -weather permitting we are off blackberrying :T and possibly off to the NAAFI on the way back in case there are any uber bargains..not that i need anything-6 -8 -3 -1.5 -2.5 -3 -1.5-3.50 -
