Talking of snails and 'real' coffee.. apparently coffee grounds are a good snail repellant - not toxic to us obviously but the poor little snails can't handle the caffeine!

Does that work for slugs as well? I've got 2/3 cafetieres worth of real coffee grounds per day that I've just been chucking - another sin, another Hail Mary:rolleyes:

:rotfl::rotfl:Do you think if we do something non-money saving we should say a 'hail Martin' :rotfl:

CW18, : The RNI for potassium is 3500 mg/day for adults (over 18 years) of both sexes, and if you click here, there is a huge list of foods which are very high in potassium, starting with the highest, tomato puree or paste. I think paste is to the US market what we call double concentrated puree 22p a tube in Tesco. Anyhow, a cup of that would be nearly all of hubbies daily requirement! So I'm thinking pasta with a rich tomato sauce? Blend the puree with a little olive oil and some fresh basil leaves?

    Potatoes are great too!

Kittie, what a great story! I spent 4 months in Poland in total, and I do like the food very much! If you have a pierogi recipe, I would love you to post it, methinks that would be a very money-saving meal!;) Your Dad sounds lovely! Bardzo Dobja! (think my speling is v bad in Polish!)

Shaz hello! :hello:I've missed you, but I understand the garden's been beckoning ;) What will you put in the raised bed, or will you wait for autumn now?

On doing the costings, I find that Mysupermarket.co.uk is very good, because it gives you the price of everything per 100grams. So I go on there, pretend to shop for all the ingredients, then use my calculator.:D

So the veg oil is 9.9p per 100g, and I use, say 60g in a recipe, I just do 9.9 x 0.6, and so the oil is 5.94p. Add all my ingredients together, and then divide it all by the number of portions. IYSWIM?!

I'm working on a little calculator that can be available online to help people work out how much their recipes cost to make. I'd like to get my Dad involved, as he is something of an IT whizz! (The origin of my geeky ways I think:D)

thanks Weezl :) Will check the list later, as I'm about to switch off and head out (should have gone 20 mins ago!)

Potatoes - he has them 2 or 3 times a week. The tomato thing's not so good though, as he doesn't like tomato soup or "very tomato" sauces (though I did get the 2 tubs of tomato and marscapone yesterday that he eats ;) must check the lables on the tubs to see if they give any details )

and as a parting shot to amuse you all for the day.....

I'm still working through the old thread as well, and yesterday I hit a certain conversation about alternatives for loo rolls (when money was running out).

Well, since reading that I've found that I've been counting the 'square' every time I use some, and this morning (without thinking) I even found myself trying with less to compensate for a visit I'd accidentally torn off more than normal :rotfl:

It's got to be worth a go - think it's good for the soil as well as I know you can put it into compost.

I think it's too warm in my house to make pastry.. ended up in a melty buttery mess.. but I've used it anyway, it's not puff pastry but I'm sure it'll be edible! My spinach and ricotta filling is lovely - even if I say so myself! A couple of cloves of garlic (err... 3p ish?), about half a bag of spinach (25p), half a tub of ricotta (36p), the end of a pot of natural yoghurt (2p), splash of lemon juice and a pinch of salt, and it turned out a little bit too runny so thickened up with a handful of oats. Made filling for 8 small pastries plus enough leftover to use as pasta sauce for one meal (today's lunch possibly!). I reckon approx cost of one pastry is about 8p.

Ooh and Kittie, would love to see some Polish recipes - have Polish relatives too, though a few generations back, and am off there for my first visit in a few weeks time!

    Hi weezl

i have a simple xcel template but would like to add a database of prices so dont need to check reciepts constantly ..............unfortunately prices are changing too much to do this at the mo

The raised bed is indeed for veg its made from 4 railways sleepers we got free(sister works in trains) so its 2.4 m or 8ft square and a fooot deep(hubby) will be digging down a bit into ground for a bit extra depth ...............shoulder no better seing a specialist on 16th

Down side is need 4 tons soil to fill it ...........£33 ton around here:eek:

we have a plan... we have a free supplier of horse muck so plan to fill a third full with this ...our own compost bins are almost ready so will sift out any lumps and add this too ........just put an ad on freecycle hopefully that will make up the rest

Greenhouse is up but not level or secured down yet ,thats todays job if it ever stops raining also a path to lay inside it and a bench/potting table to build (got wood for this)

Hubbys dad gave us a paraffin heater and paraffin for the greenhouse so we could grow winter stuff but not sure what yet

Also fancy doing a bit of plant propogation to sell at gate for a bit extra need to look into best plants for this

so much for hubbys week off....................honestly he's never happier than fiddling in his shed:D
