Have had my beef (tender was a total understatement, especially as it had been frozen which I often find toughens them up!), used the bone to increase the amount of stock produced, and now have 2 tubs of stock (originally each held 300g of pasta sauce) -- but no idea at all what to use it for
I make chicken stock, when I manage to get a full bird at a good price, and then use that for rissotto, but have never had homemade beef stock before
Any ideas welcome..... but nothing spicy please, as other than chille and enchilladas I don't "do" spicy foods. Not even being able to stomach the smell of a curry is my biggest problem though, as the lovely couple who moved in next door to us a few years back are Indian origin -- so we regularly get the smell of curry drifting over the fence, especially during the summer when they have al-fresco parties
The big dog (the one who eats the veg) is in his element as he now has a bone to give his teeth a work-out on
In answer to an earlier question Weezl posted for me - nope, I've never eaten marrow bone. Never heard of them being used as a food for anyone/thing except dogs -- unless you mean how my Dad used to use a teaspoon handle to scoop out the marrow after roasting a joint with a large bone (which he then ate straight off the spoon). I couldn't abide that as a child, and now we have 2 dogs who both love bones (and we rarely have anything with a suitable bone for dogs) I wouldn't like to deprive themCheryl0 -
Hiya weezl, have heard good things about your thread so have come to read up:T
I notice you are from cardiff and I visit there to see my son and his family which inclues my lovely 18mth grandson. Their house is too small for me to stay over, can you recomend anywhere, cheap, and nice of course. They live in Ely and that's the only place I know how to get to?

If you like soups, beef stock is lovely in Scotch Broth - and the mix is only 12p a bag in Tescos at the moment. I'd say 1/4-1/2 a bag would make at least 4 portions
I do apologise. I have just double checked the tesco website and it is only vegetable broth mix that is available on there and it's 37p/packet! The broth mix is also available in my local store and is currently 12p a bag (500g).0 -
cw you can freeze the stock...would be good to add flav to any meat dish and if you what it in with veg would make a nice soup..I always whizz mine & you can freeze that too!
Herewegoagain Catherdral road (I am also in Cardiff!) is very good for B&B's and as long as you dont come during a match or concert you should be fine! Its also easy to get to but you could google for directions! From Ely its turn right & then left!
Dont worry about workings out Weezl! Not making it until tomorrow as pooped too - body rather than brain is fried! Waiting for CF to go out and I'll then watch a DVD blissfully loud! Hi cw18,

The broth mix is also available in my local store and is currently 12p a bag (500g).Hoping the weather improves by Monday so I can walk up to our local Tesco (3+ mile round trip) for a few other bits -- so will have a look for the broth mix there. (not a 'metro', but not a huge store either).
ISOM - I generally end up freezing some of my chicken stock, but don't have space for anything just now (not since I put in a tub of Weezl's frozen yoghurt last night and 2 tubs of pasta sauce earlier today) Normally lob some Oxo granules into mince dishes, and think I'd rather use the 'proper' beef stock for something a bit special. As a bonus my hubby likes Scotch Broth soup too

Hi Sandy2
It is a recipe that I used when teaching adults with learning disabilities cookery. It is not a 'rich' fruit cake, but still tasty.
We used the large baked bean tins (400gish?)
Hope that helps

hi weezl i've been reading this thread and your last one with interest i was wondering if you'd thought about collecting snails from your back garden to eat. You just need to feed them carrot gratings for a while until they poo orange (so you know they've been detoxed) and voila free food!!0

Morning all :T
Day 6. Feeling good.
:hello: cocalls, Hi and welcome, and what an intriguing idea about the snails! Errrrrm, so I harvest them, put them in a tub with holes in the lid, sling in some grated carrot and wait for orange poo.... Right ho! I'll chat it through with Mr W. in a bit. It's amazing what you can eat when you put your mind to it! Some people on those 'wild food' programmes seem to just cook snails straight from nature, what are the dangers with that?
applemella, :beer:the cakes in little tins are very interesting too, did you use yours as gifts?
cw18, what about a reduction of the beef stock with a splash of cream and some dried porcini mushrooms, stirred through home-made tagliatelle? That could be a pretty special meal? OOOh drooling on the keyboard again!
About the marrow bone, it's just that I read a Jeffrey Steingarten article on a marrobone recipe he'd done, and it sounded delish! But I wouldn't want to make a suggestion that deprives the dog!
:hello: Hiya and welcome betterlife. With very nearly 4 little ones and the cats, I'm so impressed you're able to think about batch cooking and growing your own! What an amazing inspiration you are. I really agree that your little 'uns will benefit so much from having a Mum who shows them where real food comes from, and how to make a little go a long way!:D
Herewegoagain, agree that cathedral road has nice B and Bs, there's another place too, that's £24 per room per night, is it called 'etap' maybe? Have a little google trawl, cos I think they are very nice, clean and a very good price!
Love Weezl x
