  • We've had a fab day today.....popped out to a charity event and forgot to take sarnies  so ended up having hog roast......and noticed that the head was there  so I asked what they did with it....not expecting a response saying it was binned normally...so we came away with a hogs head already cooked for £0 :T also kept a business card, now I've experiemented with what we had I'm hoping to forge a link to maybe pick up a regular load once a month or something..I hate to see waste, and with it already being cooked..that's a bonus....we ended up with giant yorkshires, whoopsied veg and hog roast for tea for 4 of us.....we also went blackberry picking, and found 3 cherry trees with fruit on :D as well as more apples....so we had apple & blackberry crumble with 8p custard on for afters...yum...and there's more to go in the freezer..if I can fit it in!!!

Better go and have a hunt for hogs recipes for next time....

mmmmmmm i love hog roast! or is it just the crackling? ;) maybe next time i come across a hog roast at some event, i'll have to ask about the head myself !! not sure i could deal with though, even if it is cooked! freecycle ... did it still have brains and wotnot in? eyes? anything else??? what did you do with it?

i got a whole bag of apples from my dad today, so along with free blackberries from our walks, made a yummy balck berry and apple crumble, stewed another load of apple to freeze, AND made apple and black berry jam. i have some plums from my neighbours tree ... i feel more jam coming along!!! (as i still have a few portions of plums from last year in the freezer!!!)

got a busy week coming up making lots of biscuits and cakes, and a couple of pasta/rice/?sauces to take on holiday with us next weekend.

seem to have spent lots this week, as went to lidl and stocked up on things from there, and then had to go to mr T to get jam sugar ... and there were lots of RFQS items, then had to go AGAIN to get MORE jam sugar ... and yet more RFQS ... so freezer/cupboards are FULL, so hopefully that should see me through the rest of the month!

good to 'see' you weezl, and hello to everyone else!

Here's were I admit to being a complete wuss ;) yes, it had everything intact...eyes...teeth...nose....must admit I wasn't brave enough to go past the 'normal' meat, so I'm guessing the brains were there as well.....the carvery lady said that sometimes folks use the cheeks in chinese cooking, but these had already gone, as had almost all of the crackling...there was still enough meat for us to have tea with though, next time if I do it again I'll be a bit braver and adventurous...it was just the thought of our 5 and 2yr olds walking in to see a hogs head in the kitchen, but would have given them a bit of education about the food we eat.....so we only used the meat which was left around the neck, under jaw/cheek area....next time i may pop it in the slow cooker once I've done some research and then use it a second time to make stock....not enough time today.

I'm sure it's well out of date but that never puts me off!!
Glad I'm not the only one :) But I have to make sure containers are hidden as soon as I've opened them, as son will glance at them as he comes into the kitchen -- and if the date is even a month ago he'll refuse to eat something!! Have just about got him used to the fact the date doesn't hold for things like bread and meat I've bought and frozen ;)

(which was a miracle as he doesn't like getting me things for the house as pressies)
My parents are the same..... they questioned me a number of times when I asked for a fridge for my birthday (Jan 1988), and again when I asked for a fancy deep fat fryer for Christmas the same year (thermostat and timer, which actually drops and raises the basket so doesn't matter if kids sidetrack you). I also got raised eyebrows on telling them the money they gave us for Christmas 2006 paid most of the cost of a new tumble drier :o

Very moneysaving Weezl ways - got myself some cooking apples for total cost of 0p (cant improve on that:D ).
    Well done :T

Sounds like I should be getting ready for the freebies I get by the bucketful from my parents every year.....

    Anyone frozen stewed apple?
Regularly, given the quantity my freebies come in ;)

I've been testing a Xmas pud recipe today. It was to be cooked in the microwave but on cooling it has gone quite hard and dried out.
I gave up cooking high fat/sugar content foods in the microwave years ago -- they always dried out on me :(

    Lucky you :j

Think I could manage one if it came ready cooked -- and especially for nothing as that saves on the fuel bills too ;) Not sure about having to work round the eyes though

Was telling my Dad about the pig head escapades of Weezl on Thursday, and he said all he's ever had from one is the cheeks -- which apparently he loved.

Ah that's the problem then. Guess I'll do the actual one the old-fashioned way after all then... will still see how this turns out after a little bit of "feeding" and we might still be able to have it at least for family puds :D

For anyone who likes BBQ sauce btw, try mixing ketchup and brown sauce. It's yummy! (I'm munching supper as I type :D )

  • I have just made these and they are so economical they might even be suitable for weezls!!

    Courgette flatbreads
    225g (8oz) wholemeal flour
    4 tsps cumin seedds
4tsp nigella seeds (black cumin I omitted these)
    100g (3 1/2 oz) courgette coarsely grated
    2tbsp oil (I used vegetable)

Seive the flour, add spices and a little salt ( i left salt out).
Press courgettes to remove liquid and add.
Slowly add 120-150ml (4fl oz) water and add oil.
Knead to make a smooth dough.
Cover and leave to rest for 30 mins
    Divide into 8 balls
Roll each into a thin circle ( 6 inch)
Fry for 1 min on each side. keepwarm. I dry fried mine.

I had mine with weezl's sag aloo, theyre quick to do and tasty and i think you could vary the spices. Super cheap if you happen to have HG courgettes.
Eat food, not edible food-like items. Mostly plants.

Taken from The Dairy Book of Home Cooking

I still have my copy of the revised one, 1970s. I gave away the first version that MIL gave me when we got married. I think that was from a few years earlier.

Always use it for my hot cross buns, barm cakes (baps) etc.

It was also in the days when dairy products were considered healthy and cheap.

I make something similar, but use the iced bun recipe. I have to admit that as I was scrolling down the picture I thought I was looking at pig's brain!

    Zzzz

It was a hand-me-down anyway from my mum. :) Nevertheless, they didn't taste much like brain - they were delicious :D It's been quite a cheap weekend all in all, unless you count buying the new cake tin for the wedding.

I hope everything's still going ok, Weezl. :)
