I'm a bit unsure as to whether it would be wise to get blackberries near where I live. They're in a business park which has a railway (diesel trains) running through it but in quite a deep cutting and the blackberries are at the top of the bank. Its also quite a busy road with buses and trucks, but the majority of the planting is maybe 2-3m away from the road? Also considering people take their dogs walking in there, do you think it would be safe to go?
DD is desperate to go and pick some
I would wash the fruit to get dust and cack off - put a tiny squeeze of washing up liquid in the water to get rid of greasy deposits (not to make bubbles, a really tiny amount) and pick above 2 foot high to avoid the likelihood of dog pee, but should be ok apart from that.
Always best to pick into boxes or small baskets - far more liklihood of crushing in carrier bags.0 -

Have a lovely holiday Sian:j
Cheryl, I'm so sorry things are so difficult. Remember to look after yourself, too, okay? (((hugs))).
And Sammy (((hugs))) to you, too.
Ended up not staying in all weekend, but went out to see the Dark Knight on saturday. Wow. Just... but the rest of the weekend was all about stardropping things (my house is so shiny now!) and cooking up more meals-from-ingredients. I'll post up some recipes once I've tasted them. I did some walking around my local area too (it was lovely weather in between the biblical downpours...) and I've found some hidden out the way brambles that look to be coming on - I must go out and check them again next weekend :j

What do you mean by artisan bread i know it means craftsmen baked but how is how you make it different to normal bread?? i have a great bread cookbook with artisan bread recipes from all over the world but the basic methods seem the same ?? this is the updated version of the book i have ,
I also have a great little bread machine book
Shaz
sorry I shoulda said properly, I meant the Artisan bread in 5 mins a day, the one where you mix up enough dough by hand for about 4 loaves at a time,no kneading and then leave in the fridge (for up to 2 weeks) and when you want to bake a loaf or whatever you take it, out cut some off, then shape & rise before baking. There's a big thread about it
here with lots of tips and pics on.
No good for me though I either got pancakes or bricksI bake bread by hand but not very often, want to get into it more though as I find shop bought bread bloats me but hand baked doesn't

I haven't managed to keep up with Weezl and all the comings and goings, will go back thru the thread at a later day. I just dipped in this afternoon to see what was going on. THe pig's head thing caught my attention.
The last couple of weeks I was on holiday, my sis has a house in Tobago. Foodwise we generally know what to expect. I lived there as a babe and visited a couple of years ago when sis was living there again.
I saw pigs tail one day in the supermarket. I was marginally surprised by this. Another day when I saw Pig Snout I was rather more surprised. The thing that really surprised me more than anything was that each packet cost more than we would pay for a lb of good mince here! At the end of the day, I regard snout and tail as 'offal'. No 'offal' jokes please!"Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

I think that's just rude and hurtful - as well as being daft - how can you tell if you'll like something without trying a little bit?
I also get ratty when people put salt on food without tasting it first!0 -
By a quick reckoning, I'm hoping to get around 55 meat portions from my haul yesterday:p
The steak will have made 7--4 yesterday served with jacket spud & salad & 3 today made into a 'sandwich' with chips & salad. I put them all on my trivet over a roasting tin, after bashing them with a wooden spoon first. I let them rest on there for about half hour, then did the black pepper grinder bit & covered them with foil. Around 40mins in the lower half of a Gas 6, then took the foil off, moved them up to the middle of the oven & browned around 15mins. Mind you, I also left everything in the oven around 10mins but turned the gas off....very succulent meat.
I also got the obligatory fruit & veg, including a bunch[?] of asparagus for 60p.....the offer was 2-4-£1 but seeing as it's only the Iggie who eats it on & off, I was very good & resisted:p So four spears went into a little casserole dish with just enough water to cover, & put in the lower part of the oven for half hour-ish--still firm but texture of a steamed veg--then Pup's frozen mixed veg went in the dish & up the top of the oven with the spuds.......6 dinner elements cooked in one oven in approx two hours...that'll do for me:DFull time Carer for Mum; harassed mother of three;loving & loved by two 4-legged babies.
