mmm, oatcakes. I was just reading a recipe for those last night, and oddly was wondering how much they would cost to make. Frugality is permeating every aspect of my life!

Main food shop tonight, let's see how that goes. Hopefully well. I'm still really enjoying the thread - hopefully I can emulate some of the wonders that happen here! (maybe even grow courgettes for a courgette cake next year!)

he he I fear this thread is taking over my rationale! Did I hear mention of other people on here who are on slimming world? 50p or less recipes VERY welcome in my direction!!!

I totted up the split pea and potato (and probably nettle since I am after more veg but have run out of this week's food budget) stew I was planning on making tonight, and can't decide if I feel 1) like a failure, since per portion it is 65p or 2) like a success because I reckon 65p for a hearty meal is good going for me, so I'm plumping for option 2!! :p:D

(oh and it might make more like 3-4 portions, I just know I get greedy and have 2nds! )

Still wondering what those who do a day's food for 50p have for breakfast, if Weezl or anyone else who does brekkie for pennies get the time to reply to me I would be really grateful! I have switched from Weetabix to lidl's own brand and get free milk at work, so reckon mine's not too much, just wanted some other ideas too :o

Sorry this is turning into a long thread, but is it possible to set yourself up to grow vegetables cheaply, and is it too late to plant anything veg or salad based? I am on such an unbelievably strict budget, I don't think I can afford a bag of compost. Have access to unlimited free horse muck though, if anyone knows of plants that will grow in that mixed with soil, I should be laughing!!! :rotfl:

French beans should love manure and soil and will give you beans if you start them now.

My average cost for a main meal in June was 76p a head.

In July (as of last Thursday, which is as far as I've currently priced - been busy with family things since then, though I know what we've had and it's just waiting for prices to be added) it's coming in at 72p a head

I'm aiming to get to 65p on a regular basis by the end of the year (not easy with groceries going up so fast), so reckon you're doing well at that :T

just off to w*** and must go as not dressed...out for dinner last night so diet was dire lol! think for getting pregnant you either have to baste or have that s e x thing i've heard alot of but neither apply (although one mate did very generously offer to provide a sample which was very lovely but I declined!) so no no pregnant! have a fab day all! Has anyone got a lovely oldie style carrot cake recipe?

 Hmm I wimped out of including the nettle in my stew last night as had guests and didn't want them to think I had lost the plot! Must try harder, I'm not normally embarrassed about things like that!!

However I did think I could eek the leftovers (1 portion) out to 2 by adding a tin of peas, a tin of baked beans and some more rice, (total additional cost = 54p) so as I'm cooking again tonight I really should be brave and add nettles to this one!

Does anyone have any tips for nettle ettiquette?! :o Do you blanch first and then chop to avoid getting stung? Or just bung in whole fresh nettles and hope they disintegrate? Do you use the stems?

As you can tell, numpty here is loving the idea of foraging, but finding the practicalities a little more confusing than first thought... Still, its nearly the weekend and I will be going out in the local forest to forage some wild raspberries. :T Its a bit fiddly as they are so small (and because I usually ride the horse to get there, he "helps" because he now has a taste for them! ) and they are generally in the middle of the bush, but they are so tasty its well worth it!

I think that's a success - I'm trying to get down to £1 per person/portion. Managed to reduce some of them and worked out August meal plans involving lots of chilli coz it works out one of the cheapest of my meals (71p including bought wraps - 52p if I make my own wraps) - (Oh wouldn't survive without meat )

I can't remember what weezl said she had for breakky on the other thread - toasted HM bread?? or was it porridge??

I have porridge oats soaked in water with raisins (but I like jumbo oats so think that increases the cost somewhat ;))
working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?
