Hi bails thanks for that - so, excuse the newbie ignorance, how does one potato that sprouts some leaves under the earth, erm, produce lots more - I mean, am I right in thinking the potato itself is a root, and it will create more 'roots'? And in this amazing test of my newbie and hopeful green fingers, how many luverly homegrown potatoes might I expect for my 1 x whoopsied potato, as an example? x

This is two potatoes growing in a bin

This came from one of the above potatoes

I could have had more potatoes but was impatient and wanted to use home growns to make potato salad for the buffet at frugal party. :D

This is a baked potato, 16 days after planting it

Yes, the new potatoes grow from the green stem, hence why you need to keep covering over the green bits so that more grow. Although I have convinced you that I know what I'm talking about, I am yet to do this myself :rotfl::rotfl:so lucky Nyk came in with some photos! My potatoes are sprouted and awaiting someone to drill holes in pots so they can be planted  In my defence, I do have broccoli, spinach, tomatoes, courgettes, squash, strawberries, herbs, apples, black and redcurrants already growing, some of which have even required my help :rotfl:

Congratulations on finding yourself a nice young lady, Mr DT  JumbleBee and I shall try our best to console ourselves with some free bingo, but how on earth are we going to break the news to Mumzy when she gets back online?

I'm sure you'll cope :) Anyway, I can still flirt online haha!

As for mumzy, well isn't she a secretive little thing... She'll be ok, she has met a handsome young man! :D

AAARGH! Here I am sitting wondering where everybody are as it is so quiet and while I am waiting my outlook to ping with the information that new message has been posted you have been galloping away. It took me ages to catch up and now I can't remember what I needed to say. Except lots of hugs, kisses, cuddles etc for everyone needing them.

Looby - Greys are wonderful wonderful dogs. I came to love them when I was working as a kennelhand few years ago. They are so undemanding and lazy. Just give them a comfy bed to sleep on and they are happy. I am sure your OH would fall in love with one in no time. Perhaps 2 femails in Micra with back seats down :rotfl:. Well I have had 2 Old English Sheepdogs, 2 labradors and 1 retriever in Clio (and westie in the front).

Bails is heading here soon to check on my progress so better go now and get something done ;).

    Have a good day everybody,

    Marru

    How simple is this?
It's never too late - get yourself a deep tub (I have an old kitchen swing bin that someone was throwing out) and some compost/soil mix or, even, a cheap grow bag (£1 - £1.50). All you need to do is keep a couple of supermarket potatoes lying around until they start to sprout a bit and then stick them in a layer of compost in the bottom of the bin. Make sure you have plenty of drainage holes in the bottom and that it's sitting somewhere safe. The potatoes should begin to grow within a week or two. Each time the leaves grow through the surface of the soil or compost, cover them up with another layer and just keep doing this until the tub or bin is almost full then let the leaves keep growing. The potato plants will eventually flower then begin to wilt. When this happens, you can start digging around for some potatoes and pick what you need as you need them. Save any compost you dig out back into the empty bag as this then does for other things, like peppers. I just save the seeds out the middle of my peppers, dry them out and then plant them. I got so carried away, I ended up setting up my own web pages so I could save all the pictures of my progress. :)

I've thought about trying this before, mad really that it daunts me!

I have a silver small kitchen bin outside that isn't used, would that be big enough? It's just one of the little ones, it was a brabantia cheapy copy but the lid was a bit rubbish! And I can do that at this time of year?

    Wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww...........your web site is amazing - you've worked so hard!!! :T :T :T :T

Hi Lingo, I saw Mr DT's original post too, but he's EDITED IT!! I saw the original small print, DT, I saw you denying it, but now that part's gone, gone, gone! :rotfl:  Where's Jumblebee with her catchy little song when we need her? :D

PS: Are Marru and I the only ones desperate enough for free bingo? I actually remembered today, but there are only 2 of us sneaking in there, I think. :rotfl:
