if a company puts a smart meter in in his case eon and you choose to go to a company that doesn't support the smart functionality then it is just a standard meter a reader will come round read your meter and you will be billed0

We had EON around to fit a smart meter last week (Gas & Electric)
Install took about an hour all in.
So far I am really impressed, the display unit is great, its accurate and works of your actual tarrif rather than an average figure, shows comprensive usage reports, and I love the Red Amber Green Traffic Light system for quick checking od current usage.
Personally cannot see a downside to them, no more meter readers or estimated bills. A clear unit showing true useage of both Gas and Electricty.
IT really is helping to reduce costs by seeing exactly how much we use each day.
Only my opinion, but think its fantastic..Over 100k miles of Electric Motoring and rising,0 -
British Gas have installed smart meters in my area South Yorkshire for well over two years. From what i understand theres no problem you switching supplier but then the meter loses its smart functionality.British Gas would remain the server and there seems to be no set up at the moment to liase with other suppliers to transfer. The excellent monitor remains though.I have spoken with a few First Utility customers who have switched to British Gas and they confirmed that their smart meter is now a normal meter unless they switch back. My suspicious mind thought that this was the reason Brit Gas piled into installing these meters before the other suppliers and before even they got government ratification for them0

I had a call from BG yesterday to say they are installing smart meters in April.0

How would anyone know the meter readings were correct when they take them ready for a bill, when you wouldn't know when they're taken or what the reading was? You would never be able to check that the bill was correct? Couldn't this lead to mistakes been made where a reading is wrong?
