This will be part of the government funded EDRP trial - where several companies are installing smart meters as a trial. The 'smart' functionality will only be compatiable with your current supplier, so you will lose it if you switch, but it doesn't prevent you leaving and going back to giving manual reads.

The only caveat is that they do have the right to charge you for the meter if you leave in a certain period of time, but they should tell you about this up front, so check before you sign up. If there is no barrier like this, then defiantely go for it!
  • Tru, We had the same offer and went for it. Took around a couple of hours to install. No dramas.
Engineer did not leave a manual for the room display, which is nice as the back page is where he has to complete all the useful information such as, install date, final meter readings, serial numbers of meters and installers hame.
Downloaded the manual, it gives the limits set for the usage lights.
    Green is less than 150Watts
Amber is between 150W and 1000W
    Red is more than 1000W

Yes, Green is less than 150 Watts, when is the average house going to be using less than 150 Watts ??

We've had smart meters from E.On for about 3 years now. The meters are outside, where the old ones where, and we have a plug-in monitor for anywhere inside which shows gas and electricity usage. We get an accurate statement once a month, rather than estimated statements every 3 months.

Jemma-T. they didn't cut into our phone line. The meter has a built in SIM and it uses the mobile phone network to send its readings. Before they installed it they tested the mobile signal strength.

We haven't tried changing supplier, though we have switched E.On tariffs several times. We are currently on Save Online2, which is a very good deal, but it ends at the end of this month.

IvorL - I very rarely see the green light on. Maybe when I come down stairs on a Sunday morning to make tea and coffee for a lie-in (before I switch the kettle on of course)
  • I too have received a letter from EON inviting me to have a Smart Meter fitted.

I came on the forum to get some opinions and I would just like to thank all of you who posted on this subject. You helped me reach a decision. To install or not to install

These meters are new technology and as such will probably be further developed. If I am to take part in what is essentially a research programme to test the Smart Meters I would expect to get paid for it or receive discounted energy.

This isn't going to happen, so I will wait on the sidelines and watch the development progress.
  • I nearly had one installed but they are only compatible with Eon. The cynic in me sees it as a good way to keep customers. If you get it installed it will still be usable for other suppliers except the 'smart' part.

I'm going to wait until they come up with a universal smartmeter or they come up with a gas/elec supplier who you would want to be with year after year and that doesn't bamboozle you with different plans at different rates. Why doesn't Eon just give me a good deal that I would want to stick with for more than a year or two? I'm bored of switching but I need to to keep the costs down.
I'm sure I went upstairs for some reason.
  • When E.On SaveOnline 2 ended I switched to E.On SaveOnline 9 which came top of my best buy list when I ran my figures through a comparison website. So the question about what will happen when I switch suppliers has been postponed again.
  • Yes they are rolling it out early we are not required by law to have them until 2014. Look up Smart Meters by minivanjack on you tube

lots of worrying reasons not have one until you really HAVE to
  • I had a new meter installed a few months ago. I don't know if it is a 'smart' meter but I had it installed because the previous one was keeping e7 heaters on at peak times. The new one is also doing this now costing me extra money and BG won't replace it. So if the new 'smart' meters can't even tell the time I wouldn't trust them. Apparently there's court cases in US. There's also the privacy angle. A potential burgalar could hack into your meter and know when your on holiday. If they can be hacked into what's to stop the energy companies falsifying the readings? Apparently the energy companies are going to spend 9 billion pounds on these meters so there must be something in it for them.
  • I had Eon smart meters installed a few months ago. They were installed in my porch so I don't have to grovel under the stairs. Suits me as I don't have to be in for any meter readers now. I don't use the free monitor as I only use what I need anyway.

I've been invited by EON to have one installed. Are there any possible downsides?
