Eon smart meter
Options
We've had a letter from Eon saying they want to install a smart meter in my house.
I'm not bothered whether the meter is clever or not - lol - but I've just read THIS thread and want to make sure that they're not going to put in a meter that's only compatible to their system.
Does anyone know anything about it?

Smart meters are something new, not all companies like BG support these yet, so would be careful to what you say to them, other people maybe able to advise better but I know BG does not support these yet.0

My guess is that you've been selected as part of a trial as installing smart meters is not common practice. Since this is new technology there could be potential problems in the future if you want to change suppliers. Can you post more details of the contents of the letter?0

After borrowing an electricity monitor I have to say I would love a smart meter. I think just having it will make sure you cut your usage.Self Employed, Running my Dream Jobs0

I think the meter is a great idea, I just want to make sure we won't be stuck with the same supplier if we have one. I like to switchBulletproof0 -
Who would you complain to if they mess things up now or there's a problem in 2 years' time? Can you really trust these scumbag companies?
SmartMeter™ = energy companies have to do even less to collect their money. I wonder if my local Tesco's will let me use a SmartMeter™ for ordering my shopping? Very convenient for their bank balance.0 -
I was due a new gas meter (from British Gas (my supplier for gas)). I got a letter from someone called Sodastream (or something) workingfor M-Power (or something) saying my old meter was passed its sell by date. I made an appointment and was told a company called Enterprise would do the install. Enterprise the vehicle hire company? The day before Enterprise were due I got a letter from Scottish Gas (note all other letters were from "British Gas") saying that I should make an appointment as I needed a new meter etc etc. OK, so I phoned Sodastream again and the agent I spoke to said "He'd never seen this before". Apparently British Gas had cancelled the meter install manually on their system. He took my number and said he'd get back to me. Quite important that he did don't you think since my meter was due to be replaced (with a standard meter only, nothing fancy).
That was 4 weeks ago. I do know why my new meter was cancelled by BG, I moved to Scottish Power for gas in between the time I was waiting for my new meter and the cancellation. Obviously, BG had no intention in paying the charge for install when it would move to SP.
That website (ERA) linked to on this thread is a laugh a minute reading it. The "consumer is in control". LOL. Smart meter? Smart for shareholders maybe. I don't like the idea of them cutting into my phone line either as I use the engineer's socket on my mastersocket for ADSL. I suppose the ERA is waiting for the government to pass laws so it's illegal not to allow them entry into your house to install these SmartMeters™. Absolutely no real detail about these meters (what if you don't have a phone line?) except for fluff and website Flash and a few links to 'help' sites that tell you how to steal £1000s of the government for getting another private company to install £50 worth of loft insulation and £1.50 of double-sided foam around your windows. Oh, and lots and lots of nice colour leaflets.
Can we really trust these companies? :money:0
