Cheapest wine ever in ASDA
Comments

One thing to keep in mind when buying cheap wine is that the first £1.28 of every bottle is duty. Therefore, if your bottle only costs £1.60, just 32p is going into producing the wine (grape growing, bottling, export, marketing etc, etc). I would suggest plonk this cheap is only good enough to cook with or take somewhere you don't want to be invited to again!0

On the other hand it could be close to its sell by date and with the duty and cost of everything already paid for by Asda, they could be cutting their losses and making what they can quickly now - In which case it may not be as bad as you make out.To infinity and beyond!0

True, but this is half decent supermarket plonk. No doubt heavily discounted to get rid of it, but I think it's very tasty and went well with a 1lb of char grilled rump steak last night!!2004 Mighty Murray Red wins Trophy at Perth Royal Wine Show!this was one of them on offer.

cases are discontinued by asda - therefore they are clearing old stock.
you comment on duty is therefore irrelevant.0 -

Went to this store yesterday - none on display.
Collared chap workin in wine section who said that whilst there was none on display there was a pallet of each wine in the back.
When I asked whether he could get me some he said that they (the staff in the booze section) were under instructions not to sell any more because the store were making a loss on it!
Something about each store having to buy it in from an upper level within Asda and Hyson Green Asda were paying, I think he said £16 per case, and were therefore lossing £6 a case.
The Boss had put the sale of the wine on hold whilst he quieried it with Asda headoffice.
So it may be worth asking, if theres none on display in the store you're visiting, whether theres any in the back and when it's likely to be put on sale.

Me being a sophisticated moneysaver with a discerning pallette, I can confirm that this is a lovely drop of red.
