To crack Vista passwords you'll need to do the following:
* Go to free rainbow tables and use their rainbow tables which are less optimal than Ophcrack's rainbow tables but they cover more passwords. Or any other site that let's you crack NTLM hashes. (free rainbow tables is currently down)
* Use a dictionary attack.
* Brute force the password (will take "forever").

After the CD boots, all seems to go well until I get a black screen. Your graphic card is probably not well detected by the LiveCD. You should select the "text mode" entry in the boot menu when the LiveCD starts. It will start ophcrack in command-line mode in order to avoid having to deal with unsupported hardware. Top The LiveCD hangs while booting. It probably means that Linux does not detect well a piece of your hardware. In order to correct this, you can follow this procedure:
When you see the boot menu, hit the Esc key. You will get a "boot:" prompt.
Then enter one of the following:
* ophcrack noapic
* ophcrack noapic nolapic
* ophcrack acpi=off
* ophcrack ide=nodma
* ophcrack nocd
When something works make note of it. You can also combine them, e.g. ophcrack noapic ide=nodma
How to start ophcrack manually in the LiveCD?
1. In the GUI, click with the right button on the background and select Xterm.
2. Enter /root/launch.sh
3. If you got "No partition containing hashes found", go to the other topic of the FAQ. Otherwise, ophcrack should have startedEx forum ambassador
