Did my weekly shop today. Very impressed as I got the amount down to £39.98 from £59.87. Would have been £10 less but I took advantage of the 25% extra in Huggies and I had an extra points coupon that needed using. I did use MOC but it was all above board. Still want to bring it down more but not sure yet where to squeeze the money from as I already get value stuff when I can and don't buy any expensive brands.

Anyway, my question is how do you roast fresh parsnips? I've only ever cooked frozen ones but they're soo expensive and Mr T has stopped doing own brand in my store so I decided to get fresh ones but have no idea how to roast them properly. Any help would be much appreciated.

When I roast parsnips I pre boil them first just till their not hard. Then I put them in the roasting dish normally with the meat. Then cook till golden brown. If you have too many to use I just slice them and put them straight in the freezer.

  • i always roast parsnips like potatoes - par boil then roast in oven with some oil. But if they are cut too small not so good. Know there must be another way as not like in restaurants so will be interested to know!

night all - just watched this weeks brothers and sisters so feeling all sad and warm!!

Thanks for that. I'm sure this is pretty obvious but do you put any oil or butter on the parsnips when you put them in the oven? Also do you put the parsnips in the freezer after you have boiled them or after roasting?

Sorry, I'm just learning to cook properly - you'd think after 33 years I could do the basics!!!

    Fish Pie

Fish of your choice I use a mix of cod and salmon
    Potatoes, peeled & cubed
    Peas
    Butter/marge
    Flour
    Milk
    Grated cheese
    Boiled eggs, quartered (optional)

Just seen somebody cooking fish pie on TV,can't think who,but he cut the fish (raw, white fish and salmon)in chunks with prawns.Put in layer in shallow dish, layered cooked baby leeks, quartered h.boiled eggs, grated chese then soft mashed spuds, cooked in hot oven for 20 min or so.Looked good and saved faffing with white sauce(which is sometimes a chore for me!)
Baby leeks a bit OTT,so steam old ones!!
DH said nom nom,and he's not struck on pie.

Taking me ages to catch up,wait for me please.

Long wet w/e 2 days fund raising-made lots of lovely monies tho'.

  • For anyone copying recipes and stuff: I copy and paste mine all onto one word document, but it is now 36 pages long and I can never find anything, so this is what I do now:
    1. Highlight the heading of the recipe (ie: twinks Hobnobs)
    2. Click on 'insert' at the top of the page (usually next to 'file' & 'edit')
    3. then click on 'bookmark'
    4. type in the name you want for the bookmark (you can't put any spaces in this - ie: 'twinkshobnobs') and click 'add'
    5. do this for all your recipes
    6. then at the top of the page, make a list of all the recipes you have just bookmarked
    7. highlight each one individually (our example again is 'twinks hobnobs'), click on insert again and then click 'hyperlink'
    8. click on the 'bookmark' button (usually on the right hand side)
    9. and there are all your bookmarks you did, click on the one you want to go to (which would obviously be 'twinkshobnobs' in this example) and click OK
    10. then you have a list at the top, which when you click on the recipe title you want, it will take you down to the page it is on (even if there are 36 pages)!
You can even sort these into alphabetical order if it helps.

This sounds complicated, but it really isn't - best thing to do is just try it if you're not sure.

    Hope that helps someone

Thanks alot I have 37 pages in a word document and am having trouble finding what I want even though they are sorted into basics first, main courses and then desserts so just had a go with your instructions and ........it worked it may take some time to do them all but as I add new recipes and bookmark them as I go along should be easier:T Isn't it amazing what you can do with computers!!
Thanks to MSE savings we got to go to Disneyworld Florida.
