You could join the national trust and get into their sites for free, not very patriotic but I joined the English NT thanks to this thread, could get membership for free. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=988177
Just to add to the cinema ideas, you and the kids could get in free to selected screenings at showcase cinemas thanks to bookworm Wednesdays http://www.showcasecinemas.co.uk/frame.php?page=bookworm/2008.php0 -

Just back from a trip to Scotland and enjoyed the following:
Free off-peak Rail travel for up to 2 children (up to age 15 I think) with each full fare (off-peak) adult ticket - we used this to have a car free day and travelled about 30/40 miles or so from where we were staying to Edinburgh (to take car and pay parking would have probably been about same as or probably more than the £16/£17 it cost us for 2 adults and 3 children return - plus kids thoroughly enjoyed the train journey and long tunnel into Waverly station and we avoided stress of city roads!).
The Pittencrief park at Dunfermline http://www.fife.gov.uk/atoz/index.cfm?fuseaction=facility.display&facid=3D027727-4747-4FC9-83E667386CF5D1D0as mentioned earlier. Not there on this visit but a firm favourite with us and children from previous visits. Also Callendar park at Falkirk http://www.falkirkonline.net/For%20Visitors/Local%20Attractions/antonine_wall/falkirk.aspx.
Calderglen Country Park (near East Kilbride town centre) http://www.aboutbritain.com/CalderglenCountryPark.htm. Spent a lovely afternoon here with free hot house (plants, fish and insects) set in a lovely garden with bird/animal cages (included things such as wallabys, meerkats, various birds etc) . Not huge but very well maintained and excellent facility. Another part of park has great play area and nearby BBQ facilities. Shop, cafe and plent of open space as well for wide games (take balls, kites etc).butterfly )i(0 -
Forgot to include, I believe there is FREE swimming for children at various swimming pools in Lanarkshire.butterfly )i(0
