Lucielle's daring debt free journey

Tea was a big hit and the gravy, if I do say so myself, LUSH! I put some swede in the mash to go on top.
I phoned the garage earlier and the friendly chap said to bring the car in and he'd check it out with his machine and then take it from there.
Also had another thought the other night, I save £2 coins and I've nearly got £400 (its my sort of horse/emergency fund) and I thought why not get some premium bonds with them. Thoughts on that peeps please.
L
Hey lucielle tea sounds lush! Although i did enjoy my toast i think sometimes i should make more of an effort but then can't be bothered when its just me eating it
£400 saved is brilliant - the only thing i would say as this is your emergency money is how quickly would you be able to get your hands on cash if you needed to? I think premium bonds are 9 days ? Not sure. But if you can manage until the time it takes for the bonds to be cashed in if you needed to use the money it does sound a good idea to try and win something whilst you save upSo i say if one of the emergencys this money is for came up and the time it takes to get the cash back from the bond is ok then it sounds good.
Am sure lots of people will post with much better advice though

Yesterday I took the car into the garage to go on the machine and as soon as I rolled up the mechanic asked if I'd checked the oil. I did mention it on Sunday when we were coming back but neither me nor OH did anything about it. So to my shame and hororr (I'm usually so anal about it as well) the car hadn't got a drop in it. 5 litres later she was chugging away. A very blonde moment or what!
Took some books to the secondhand bookplace and the DDS got a couple and I picked up 2 DVDs, went to Lidl and got some fruit and veg then came home.
As OH was at the workshop, his opposite numbers on shift had a meeting. There are going to be redundancies, preferably voluntary, his job isn't going to exist and they are going to be based at a new site nearer to the city, which will mean a longer journey time and a lot more fuel costs. I wish this had come 12 months down the line as we would be in a much better position. Having done a quick calculation of the payout it still wouldn't clear our remaining debt. OH has got his meeting next week. Hoping he can get more information as we are having another meeting with our accountant on Tuesday.
Got the joys of Sports Direct today along with other places that want to take all your dosh.

Things happen for a reason Lucielle.Perhaps, redundancy is right at this time as your DH can put all his efforts in to the business full time and maybe grow it.Maybe something closer to home may come up.
As for PB I'm with dedicated on that one depends how quick you need the money back..if quite quick how about putting it in to an instant access ISA?
As for the oil that's something that I'd do and thankfully you didn't land yourself with a big bill.0 -
I'm bbbaaaaaaccckkkkk. Actually it wasn't too bad and nobody fell out with each other. Dropped DD2 off at her friends for a sleepover, need to find out what time she needs collecting.
I stopped off at the garden centre on the way home and got some mange tout and french bean seeds, as well as an obelisk. Ds2 did very well with his shopping and spent £40 of his money and got loads of t shirts and a coat he liked. DD1 bought herself an all in one pyjama thing, like a rabbit complete with hood and ears as well as tail, she does look like a tele tubby on speed!!!!!! I got some great fake eyelashes, going to take them into work with me and get the girls to give me a lesson on putting them on. Just hoping they aren't too long and scrape on my glasses.

Just been looking at the finances (again, sigh) and OH wages are down by £6407 compared to the year before. They've had their chat at work and are on one months points system. Quite how that works I'm not sure. The redundancy package would be one and a half weeks for every year, OH has approx 9 years. Is redundancy pay taxable or do you get the whole lump sum?

Redundancy pay is tax free up to £30K after that you pay tax on the amount over £30K. He will also be paid any holiday he hasn't taken up to redundancy date on a pro rata basis. If he can save it to take as money.
I don't understand the points system I'm afraid I've never come across it. Pop over to the Redundancy Board for advice.

I meant to add that somewhere on the site there is an article by Martin advising against Premium Bonds. I think he recommends sticking the money in a instant access saving account as Premium Bonds do not earn interest and there is some calculator that tells you the odds of not winning on them.

I think the coins are going to stay where they are. I know I SHOULD put them into and ISA or something like that but then it is sooooo easy to spend. Where as taking them out of a money bag is an absolute killer.
Nothing planned for today. I'll have to find out what time DD2 needs collecting, if it fits in I'll get the car taxed en route. DS1 has work this morning and then got his driving lesson this afternoon. I need to find some money for school dinners and get the chaps to sort out their PE kits.
Will possibly sit down later and talk to the chaps about OHs job. They know something is up but not what it is. ALso tell my oldest sister and put the house buying off. I'm sure it will all pan out ok, trying to be positive.

Feel like I'm sinking. Just had an email from middle sister about mums 70th. She's forwarded a menu and venue etc and it's going to cost a lot!
Just took the hounds for a walk, Ds1s dog is back at home so she came along as well. Tried to peg the washing out and it started snowing!!! Looks ok now might go and try again.
Got a chicken out to roast but not got any 'old' spuds for roasties. Still haven't sorted out the dinner money.

Lucielle ((hugs)) i've not been in a similar situation regarding an expensive 'do' that i absolutely have to attend - anything i've not had to go to over the last few years i've not gone due to being beyond skint - sadly lost some friends due to this but hey ho!
But i know that feeling of sinking and hope that something can be worked out.
I can't really offer advice regarding chatting to your family about a different venue as i don't know enough about you and your family and also recognise it is such a special and important occasion.
I know you do so much already and you've been on these threads far longer than me. The only thing i did recently when i didn't have enough money left to pay the mortgage and bills at the end of the month was eb*y a load of stuff. I made almost £600 over 2 months (listing and re-listed stuff). At the time i had *nothing* to list having decluttered to the nth degree last year. But i had no choice as i was really struggling so i set myself a challenge and i listed stuff (nothing sentimental or precious to me) but stuff i wanted to keep nonetheless. I don't miss any of it now and it did really help. I also did a storecupboard challenge saving on the shopping every week and that made a difference too.
I realise i'm probably just telling you stuff you know alreadyJust really hope things work out for you. xx
