Our daughter, an only child, went to a fee paying school. It was great for her but financially there were years when our income was less than other years which made it a struggle. As we had no other kids we didn't feel we had to "make it up" to siblings which I know other people felt.
Do also ask if there will be help with the, frequent, extra expenses such as visits and foreign trips. Seen as integral to curriculum but pricey. Some independent schools include the cost of text and excersise books with fees and some don't. Ditto with costs of public exams. In most here your child must buy lunch with them rather than take packed lunch and then there's the cost of transport. Do get a full picture. We don't regret our decision and would do it again but had we known how our income would reduce over the period we might have organized things differently!

At the moment I can't think like that because they are an expense. The way the market is I see them hanging around for a while and may just have to get rock bottom price for mine.

School will help with travel costs but not sure about the other things. Already pay for school dinners and they are in line with them.

Feeling ever so slightly stressed (understatment) with the whole horsey situation. OH had the farmers wife round this afternoon apologising on behalf of her husband. She doesn't know if she is going to stay with him or what else she can do to help. All her family are in another country. His family are all adopting the ostritch position. I don't feel safe going down there on my own. It was ok this morning as the other 2 brothers were about. OH came with me this evening.

Life is never simple. OH and I frequently ask ourselves if we will ever have a 'normal' weekend. Then the next question is 'what's normal?'
